What Do College ‘Chief Diversity Officers’ Accomplish?
James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal ^ | October 26, 2018 | George Leef

ver the last few decades, the number of college administrators has grown far more than the numbers of students and faculty. Amid this administrative bloat, the greatest growth has been in “diversity” officials. Even community colleges have begun hiring Chief Diversity Officers (CDO).

A persistent question, however, is whether having a CDO and other diversity administrators accomplishes anything of educational value. American colleges and universities are as inclusive and “welcoming” to students and faculty of all races and backgrounds as any institutions on the planet, so exactly how does a CDO make things any better?

More than ten years ago, Peter Wood and Ashley Thorne of the National Association of Scholars asked ”What Does a Chief Diversity Officer Actually Do?” and in an “emperor is wearing no clothes” fashion, answered that their jobs are pointless and self-serving. Among their observations were that the CDO must “ignore or trivialize any rational objections to the institutionalization of the diversity ideology” and to “keep the empty suppositions (about the benefits of diversity) going by repeating them tirelessly.”

Wood and Thorne, in sum, found no educational value at all in college diversity bureaucracies.

Another skeptic regarding the CDO is David Frum.

Writing two years ago in The Atlantic, Frum noted that what many minority students (and many non-minority ones) really need if they’re to succeed in college is not a “Chief Diversity Officer,” but intensive teaching and mentoring. Unfortunately, diversity officers don’t involve themselves with such nuts and bolts matters.

Instead, Frum wrote, “The pages of the diversity officers’ journal reveal more fascination with increasing demand for their own employment—via compulsory programs in ‘cultural competence’ for example—than in the hard work of mentoring and tutoring.”

What Do College ‘Chief Diversity Officers’ Accomplish?

Well, for one thing, they have a whole staff of six-figured, tenured, leftists to prop them up. Then they have multiple student organizations on the lookout for any behavior that might appear to be negative toward anyone who is not a white male. Some of these student groups actually have to scheme and plan to antagonize otherwise well-mannered conservatives, into some action that can be broadly interpreted as offensive to someone, somewhere. They constantly need to update the lists of what might be harmful, from wearing certain clothing, to proper standing posture, to not being open to dating those of all races and gender identities.

Then they need to have established and fitted “safe centers”, where the victimized, oppressed students (all but white males are eligible to self-identify as victims)can hang out without the threat of being exposed to any concepts related to self-responsibility, POTUS, or any type of traditional white male actions.

It is a big job to keep all of these elements organized and appropriately roiled up.

Saying that diversity has intrinsic value is like saying a professional sports team benefits by having a roster filled by drafting from as many different colleges as possible. While refusing to scout certain schools, for example players from lower division teams, limits your pool and might overlook unexplored talent, the mere fact that you have players from a bunch of different collegiate backgrounds means nothing. Of course an NFL roster typically has players from lots of different schools because the talent is spread around the country. But there are numerous examples of more than one player from the same school on a team. Because getting the best player available for a given spot is what matters.

Chief Diversity officer = Chief Discrimination officer

If we really wanted to abide by the equal protection clause. university admission processes should require that race, religion and name of the applicant be redacted when admissions officers review applications. They should be irrelevant to the process as there only reason for being on that form is to ennable the admissions officer to discriminate on the basis of race and religion and national origin

The function of a college chief diversity officer is to ensure that all students have a welcoming environment that does not cause them undue stress due to the student’s race, religion, gender or other such characteristics. They achieve this by making sure that the students self-segregate and are taught to hate each other.

A whole lot of kids show up to college without realizing “the others” hate them and without hating “the others”.

Someone (the CDO) needs to sort them out
* blacks over there
* women in this area
* gays here
* ...

Then tell each group that the other groups are prejudiced against them and the “straight white male” group hates all the others.

Then there needs to be training for the kids on how to recognize microaggressions and sexual harassment. Most of these “offenses” are unnoticeable without training and many of the acts would even be appreciated by both parties without the training (e.g. a woman may want help carrying a heavy box, but a man is only allowed to help other men).

Then there’s training on symbols. Not many kids know the plastic rings that hold soda cans together resemble a noose. Or that a banana peel means the person who threw it away thinks that blacks are monkeys. These symbols need to be taught.

And there is often a fierce battle for the title of “most oppressed”. The CDO needs to make sure the university hires trained/experienced referees to make sure the battle is fought fairly. For example, if it ends up the banana peel was thrown out by a white person, your group gets 10 points. But if investigation finds a black person accidently left it there, you don’t get the points. It can be a tricky call, especially when there’s no evidence either way - it’s obviously blamed on a white male in that case, but the LGBT group that’s running neck-and-neck in the battle for “most oppressed” may object to awarding the points to the other group.

After that, the CDO has a lot of work trying to make the groups get along. It’s a difficult and underappreciated job.

They accomplish nothing of any value. They destroy the values on which the country was founded. They attempt to destroy White Christian Heterosexual males.

They are in charge of raising money to build entire buildings for remedial studies, and separate dorms to keep the money bag federally funded “students” separated from the actual students who do stuff like attend classes and study

They make sure the children of White Liberal Elites are always at the top of the heap and that many talented capable black and brown students are demoralized by having to compete with people who outmatch them.

In short they do the opposite of what they’re suppose to do...

The job of the Chief Diversity Officer is to disenfranchise competent white people in favor of less competent colored people, which is simply part of the Elite agenda to destroy us and replace us.

We have had a minority diversity officer for twenty years. She makes over $100K a year and does little to nothing in all the time I have been here.

The last three years our college due to budget constraints has had to cut several positions. When layoffs started three years ago it was made abundantly clear no person of color would even be considered for being laid off regardless of their salaries, evaluations or lack of need to the college. It has made for severe tension between them and the rest of the college employees.

The current diversity officer is well within retirement age and if she had taken retirement which administration has sought for all employees in her age range-—except for her, her salary alone could have allowed for two other employees to retain their position. But no, we have to have her here to promote a gay student event and for black history month in February, which is about all she does. Totally wasted position and money.

Foe one thing, and I know this for fact, they keep blacks who turn in nothing and fail all exams from being flunked out. They ensure failing students at least get a D grade.

“Totally wasted position and money.”

Yes. Our college has a budget deficit of 600K. Their solution? Cut class sections and faculty.
