The controversial presidency of Donald Trump is not having a negative impact on the American tourism industry, the man in charge of marketing the US to the world has told Telegraph Travel.

A number of sources earlier this year and last reported that the number of international visitors to America was down as much as 5 per cent, losing the US economy up to £140million a week, according to the Global Business Travel Association. The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) said that arrivals fell by 4 per cent in the first six months of 2017, in the wake of Trump’s inauguration.

The fall in visitor numbers has been labelled the “Trump Slump” and seen as a consequence of the President’s outspoken views and attempt to ban travellers from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US.

Wouldn’t a strong dollar hurt tourism from overseas?

Could it be because the dollar is stronger, and it’s more expensive for foreigners to vacation here?

Anecdotal, but I spent last week in Yosemite National Park. Literally no one there spoke English. Many languages, mostly European, but it was an exception to speak to someone and get a response that didn’t carry a thick accent. The only place I heard everyone speaking English was on Half Dome.

What kind of idiot tourist wouldn’t visit the US because of this?

Are they afraid Trump is going to jump out from the bushes and scare the tourists?

What fresh hellish nonsense goes through the minds of these people. Brain damage.

Lived in Chino as a youth. Went to Universal Studios as a child, with YMCA Indian guides camp, before it really was a tour and was really just tourists watching them film movies and shows. Talked to Tim Conway, Ernest Borgnine and Burt Reynolds.
