Amid glowing tributes to the life and career of Arizona Senator John McCain on Monday, MSNBC took time to use the Republican lawmakers passing to trash his 2008 vice presidential running mate Sarah Palin, labeling McCains selection of the then-Alaska governor as his biggest political mistake.
McCain made some controversial decisions, some much-criticized decisions. One of those decisions was who he chose to run with in 2008, Sarah Palin, proclaimed anchor Katy Tur early in the 2:00 p.m. ET hour. She then recited a column from Washington Post Associate Editor David Ignatius making that case:
The anti-Washington rage embodied by Palin came back to haunt McCain, in the person of President Trump. My guess is McCain was one of the many millions of decent Republicans and Democrats who could never imagine that the GOP and then the American electorate (or at least the Electoral College) would actually vote for someone with such low moral character.
Tur lamented: I guess there are some out there who could argue that the choosing of Palin and legitimizing that voice, legitimizing that brand of politics, that reality show brand of politics, you could draw a straight line from that to the election of Donald Trump.
Appearing on the program, Ignatius doubled down: I think that choice of Sarah Palin was probably the biggest political mistake that John McCain made in his career.
He continued: There is an insurgency in the Republican Party. Sarah Palin was an early example of it, this kind of, you know, unprepared in the normal sense ex-governor of Alaska.... It was a poor choice. She was so unprepared for the office. Of course Sarah Palin was the current governor of Alaska when McCain selected her as his running mate.
Ignatius concluded: But I think it shows that McCain saw something changing in his party, this party that would spawn the Tea Party movement that really existed to trash Washington, the world that John McCain grew up in.
Leave it to MSNBC and The Washington Post to use the death of one politician to denigrate another.
Here is a transcript of the August 27 exchange between Tur and Ignatius:

I think while McCain was begging the NRA for their support, Sarah was shooting wolves from a helicopter. I’M WITH HER!
What we have here, is the left not letting a crisis (they could care less about) go to waste.
As well, they are truly using McCain’s death for propaganda purposes, and to score political points against conservative voters and the president they elected.
The same left piled on against McCain when he ran against Obama.
Only when McCain was visiting and doing diplomacy/bisiness with Hillary and AQI/ISIS terrorist, or working secret back door deals with the Russians, making a mockery of his voter constitiency, working as part of the fabricated dossier conspiracy (with money going from Clinton campaign to Russia), Slamming his own conservative running mate, protecting the global socialist agenda, impedimg the boarder wall he promised to get built, and creating anti-Trump theatre while betraying his voters with the ACA, could McCain receive accolades from the left he was actually a part of.
His true character was actually revealed when he betrayed a wife who loved him, gave him children, and sacrificed her life for him. She protected him, and was more physically and emotionally broken than he was. But he had to ditch her, and also hurt his children, so he could sleep around, and finally land a rich and politically connected model.
Combine this with the problems he had with MPs on occasion, a little incident with the Forestal, and an audio recorded signals catch from the CIA, where McCain was clearly being used for communist propaganda, and the left had a real peach...
And we are not even getting into “Keating Five”, blatantly anti-American campaign finance reform, or McCains efforts with Bob Dole, Trent Lott, and Mitch McConnel, to detail Newt Gingrich’s investigation into Chinagate.
No one cares about McCain. McCain is Al-Qaeda’s Bob Hope
Nicole Wallace works for MSNBC & Steve Schmidt is an MSNBC contributer.
So Katy Tur’s ideas really aren’t her own.
Typical slanted media coverage who can’t acknowledge the accomplishments of a conservative woman icon.
She is MAGA material for sure. I really wish Trump picks Sarah for VP in 2020 to show up the liberals establishment who jeered her last time. Or a cabinet posting where she can bring true Christian values to the white house.
And the liberal heads would explode from coast to coast as a bonus.
McStain would have had a Mondale-sized loss if it weren’t for Sarah Palin.
I like Sarah, but I don’t want her to replace Pence. Trump/Pence was a winning ticket and it will be a winner again in 2020.
She’s the only reason I voted for McCain in 2008. She energized the ticket and boosted his polls.
As many others have noted here, Sarah Palin was a strong motivating factor among a significant portion of eventual votes for the McCain ticket. I will give McCain one small recognition and that is his choice to be buried at the Naval Academy ensures his gravesite won’t be soaked in urine for the foreseeable future. I think that choice shows Maverick had a basic understanding of where he ranks for most. And, like Ahab, he gets the final stab at his opposition by denying them the pleasure of unzipping and letting it flow.
Horse****. Palin was the reason he did as well as he did.
Quoth McCain:
“I want to be president of the United States, and obviously I do not want Obama to be,” he said. “But I have to tell you, I have to tell you, he is a decent person, and a person that you do not have to be scared as President of the United States.”

He threw the election, IMHO.
As a Viet Nam Navy vet I could never vote for McLame. I voted for Sara and prayed that McSlime would bite himself and die, making her President.
The Left Wing Media, which Sarah Palin calls the Lame Stream Media, uses every opportunity to beat down Sarah Palin. They know that Sarah, who holds a degree in journalism, is a formidable threat to their corrupt counterfeit journalism. Sarah knows that their ideology is a danger to America and has made no bones about it. Her appeal to mainstream America, with her common sense thinking, cracks a huge hole in the hull of America’s sinking Titanic, the Lame Stream Media.
I have a similar sorrow that Sarah Palin has left the political landscape as much a others have for Senator John McCain.
I suspect the Dems had their operatives inside the McCain campaign to sabotage its strategy. This is what you get when you think it is a good idea to reach across the aisle. You pull in subversives.
They feared her because like Pres Trump, she is an outsider. They didn’t want her showing up and asking uncomfortable questions.
Sorry but McStain was the insider sabotaging his own campaign. He was the problem.
Actually the other way around.....
He certainly had help and it was not Sarah Palin.
“We are paying the price while she remains on the sidelines”
Suppose Trump will find a job for her? Suppose she’d like a job in his administration?
The Uni-party using Sarah to capture my national presidential vote for SongBird McCain AS WELL AS my state vote for a Kansas senator than hasnt held residency in his home state for over 15 years.
It was the last nail in their coffin for me. Sarah has more Maverick Firebrand American patriotic initiative in her little finger than McCain had in his entire worthless politically motivated body. Using her Tea Party popularity to isolate votes just as effectively as the Obama era IRS led by Lois Learner.
McCain did what his statist handlers told him to do and it was no different that what they had been telling his entire life. We want you to act like a patriotic American Hero, then lose and lose big to Obama. Just like you have been losing on command and by the numbers your entire life. Sarah was under the bus before the campaign even started.
Just like he was told to do.
