Silent Sam, the statue of a weary, stoic Confederate Army foot soldier, came crashing down Monday night, pulled down from his post at the edge of the UNC-Chapel Hill campus by a howling mob of protesters.
But a lot more fell than a Progressive-era statue of a Confederate soldier. Another brick in the wall that separates civilization and barbarism was dislodged. Another small part of the social contract that calls on us to settle our differences through dialogue and consensus disappeared. Another thin thread in the rule of law was severed.
Even those who feel that Silent Sam was a symbol of racismas did the mobshould be concerned about his rough treatment. Whether you believe that Sam represented white supremacy, the dignity of the common soldier, or simply the historical record of the state and campus, he now represents the defense of civil society and rule of law. And his rude descent from his perch was an assault on that civility.
It is up to the states leadersthe legislature, the governor, the Boards of Governors and Trustees, and the university and university systems top administratorsto push back against the forces of anarchy. How they do so may say a lot about the future of the stateand their own.

Is not one person alive with a shotgun to stop this madness? One person, anywhere? One person with a shotgun could hold them off until authorities arrive. One person.
The “authorities” WERE there.
They did nothing.
With all my heart I respect law enforcement....Back the Blue
And it broke my heart to see them stand down and do nothing......not even one arrest!
Let’s face it, most cops have been brought up in the same education and social system that produces these howling mobs of fanatics tearing down the statues. So, there is probably some support for such actions within the police forces throughout the country. Plus, most Chiefs of Police are political appointees who have to do the bidding of the Political Correct thing as dictated by mayors, city counsels, and governors. That’s why we have seen police forces stand down at Charlottsville, at Trump rallies, and during the recent Occupy ICE actions. It’s sad, but that is the reality we face.
The next step will be crazed mobs invading libraries and museums and burning books and historical documents they don’t like, with the police doing nothing and the media praising it. It is like the Nazis all over again.
The cops were indeed there and formed a perimeter around the mob who pulled the statue down. Sounds to me like they were actually protecting them.
Here’s a job for 3D printers:
Program a 3D printer to make a copy of “endangered” statues. Then take down the original and put up the copy. Each time that’s knocked down just make another to replace it. Keep the original safe somewhere.
Thanks for this article. As an alumnus of UNC Chapel Hill, it is exceedingly outrageous to me, but not surprising, that the powers that are in control of that university failed to marshal the force needed to prevent this mob’s violent take down of the Silent Sam statue.
From the article....”It was well known that the possibility of vandalism to Sam that night was extremely high. Social media posts and flyers posted all along Franklin Street announced the protest for dayssecurity should have been at a high point.”
I have no doubt that there were likely conversations between University officials and the Democratic Governor’s office about what kind of security would be used for this event. I am sure Gov. Cooper would have been one to side against using a strong security force, especially if it meant something like calling out the National Guard to prevent such violence. That may seem too extreme, but it is one thing the Governor could have done. A show of real force would have stopped the anarchists.
In any event, I would not make any further contributions to the Alumni Association = except for the fact that I have refused to donate already - since my graduation and since UNC-Chapel Hill has been known as a liberal haven.
I must agree, I see it coming with movies depicting historical events. Just take westerns for example, with that entire genre banned from TV, with priceless original film reels in vaults looted and burned.
I feel sorry for the people of the South having to just sit back and endure this crap knowing it will get worse before it gets better.
Someday there will be a new “Silent Sam” statue somewhere in our country. It will be that quiet person that had enough, that was a common soldier in CWII, that fought with all his might for the people and the Constitution.
If people wanted the statue removed there is no doubt a lawful process that could be implemented to do so. The left can’t be bothered with lawful processes, and why should they be considering how much success they have had with mob rule. Unless the college administrators and police respond strongly to this UNC will become a laughingstock like Evergreen State U.

My youngest daughter went to UNC CH, she went in top of her HS class and graduated a blithering idiot.
already happened.
I just took my 18 year old there this past Saturday to start her freshman year. Paying big bucks to have her indoctrinated an anti American socialist. Life can be cruel.
Like the Taliban blowing up statues in Afghanistan; the same mentality.
Red Guards v2.0
Mass hysteria never ends well.
granddaughter of the previous chanceller Sitterson was one of the ones pulling it down
UNC-CH liberal cesspool..and only getting worse since a democrat is currently governor...hey a former chancellor granddaughter “proudly” participated in the actual event! Saw the video myself, as she has “white guilt”. Yea, why doesn’t her family of Lawyers or Doctors, I assume, be the first to give back their money to to poor poor offended and why doesn’t she just dropped out and go find a person to take her cherished “slott” I’m sure she worked so hard to get...know she can afford to pay but betcha she’s on full scholarship!!!!
