Remember Y2K?

Posted on 08/11/2018 12:29:20 PM PDT by SamAdams76

I was remembering today the big Y2K scare we had during the late 1990s. Does anybody remember that? All the computers in the world were to shut down at midnight January 1, 2000 because apparently the computers would not be able to recognize "2000" as a valid year and go haywire, thinking it was 1900 instead.

As with many conspiracies, there was a grain of truth to this. There were many software programs at the time that had to be re-programmed to accept 2000 as a valid year. My wife was a COBOL programmer at the time and she had a few banner years as a contractor, fixing this bug. One one project, they were paying her nearly $150/hr.

I remember many Freepers here that were stocking up on canned goods and such, expecting the modern world to come to a sudden halt, forcing us back to a more agrarian way of life.

I was a Y2K skeptic but I do remember my heart skipping a beat as we turned the clock to midnight on December 31, 1999.

I know of no processor chip from the 1999-2001 time frame that had a date register. You must have been concerned with chips for mainframes. I worked with INTEL 4004 8008 4040 8080 8088 8086 80186, Zilog Z80, Motorola 68000 68010 68020 68040 6800 6809 68HC11. A was also working with various minicomputers at the time including the VAX and a PDP-11.

Please list the processors which had dates in their clock system and any realtime process that required dates for the control loop.

“NO EMBEDDED PROGRAM USES DATE ....”

My AC system uses dates

My sprinkler system uses dates

Did you have those in 1999?

Would anyone die if they get confused?

Would the program actually malfunction if it had the wrong date, or would it merely spray your barbecue cookout?

If I would have made one of those in 1999, it would have crossed the Y2K just fine. As I told you before, embedded systems do not keep the date in the same internal format as did business data pressing systems. But, I've already explained this to you while you merely choose to remain misinformed.

Also, you misquote me. “No embedded computer uses date for time-critical control loops”. Date in a MODERN thermostat or sprinkler system would be used as a decision filter, not a control loop. The control loop would be executed every second or minute, with date nowhere to be seen.

That would be a malfunction.

I remember celebrating New Years and hardly anyone was drinking.

I worked for a bank and it was not until the next morning that we finished doing the verifications. What a pain in the ass.

It wouldn’t kill anyone, would it? I do recall that I clearly stated very early in this thread that date based failures of embedded systems would be nuisances, not destructive or life threatening. Perhaps you didn’t actually read my posts.

I don’t fully understand why your entire system would have to be replaced.

I had a good accounting program (DACEASY by SAGE) & a bunch of clients. All I had to do was get the update on a disc. MY only problem was telling the kid on the phone THREE times that I needed a DOS system disc & he sent me WINDOWS.

They sent the right one overnight, but I sure didn’t need the delays.

Most all my clients did their own deposits & wrote their own checks. I did almost all the bookkeeping AFTER the fact at my home.

It wasn’t 100%. You can find lists of failures. But fortunately the big potential disasters were averted.

For months, our manager kept stressing to us to make sure all our code was Y2K compliant (it was). We were forced to come in to work New Year’s Eve, December 31, 1999 to handle any strangeness come midnight. Well, the only code that failed was our manager’s, so we sat around talking and eating while she fixed her code. Haha.
