Way out in Nevada, the secret base from Independence Day yes, Area 51 is hiring a pilot for the only airline that flies direct to the secluded destination. Janet Air as in Just Another Non Existent Terminal flies a nondescript red-striped fleet of 737s from Las Vegas to various sandy, high-security government outposts where, as in Vegas, what goes on there stays there.
The job posting in question is looking for a 3,000-hour pilot with an active Top Secret clearance and little interest in what their passengers do at work. According to salary research site Glassdoor, the average salary of a pilot at AECOM, Janet Airs parent firm, was $80,454 a year enough to really enjoy nightlife on the Strip with those wacky scientists youll presumably ferry to work in the mornings.

Used for testing stealth aircraft, new weapons, and (in popular fiction and conspiracy theories) alien spacecraft, the base also known as Groom Lake or at least, Area 51, Groom Lakes most notorious annex also attracts a fair amount of tourists who are looking to make first contact. Most just end up making contact with the highly trained security force that patrols the bases border.
The range is used for the testing of technologies and systems and training for operations critical to the effectiveness of U.S. military forces and the security of the United States, Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek told Task & Purpose in a statement, when asked about the purpose of Area 51 and its surrounding environs, probably for the millionth time.
The emailed response from Air Combat Command spokesman Col. Todd Vician, however, was more tantalizing. There is an operating location near Groom dry lake, he wrote, but some specific activities and operations out there, both past and present, remain classified and cannot be discussed.
Hey man, $80K to ferry spooky customers on short hops from Sin City doesnt sound half bad. But knowing the truth about little green men in the desert? Thatd be priceless.
Meh, couldn’t afford the pay cut - besides, I’d have to get 3k hrs of flight time just to try out :-)
Do they need a male flight attendant?
I’d enjoy a job on that airline.
Do flight sim hours count?
Dropped SO many GBU’s on Korea
There is probably a little known clause in the contract where you have to agree to be spied on, monitored electronically anytime anyplace when you are away from work.
It’s not worth 80k.
I’d hate having to fly to and from work every day.
I was thinking that. You take this job and your private life and that of your family is over.
Also you would probably need a poly if not a life style polygraph where they ask you very intimate private details.
Maybe - if you have qual on the new nuke bunker buster.
#7. With Obama, Mueller, the NSA under Hayden, the CIA under Brennan, the FBI under Yates and Comey, and the DNI under Clapper, YOUR PRIVATE LIFE AND THAT OF YOUR FAMILY WAS OVER FOR YEARS.
Might as well get paid $80K for it. /sarc
Good one!
Not worth the pay for the amount of scrutiny.
Besides, my friends in Vegas tell me the housing market is getting $$ again.
But if you are really a die hard Raiders fan......
$80K is not very much for that kind of a job. Even twice that would not be very much. I doubt they get any qualified applicants.
Left seat or right seat? Okay for the right seat but would suck for the left seat. As this firm is competing for qualified pilots that are in short supply, they will be paying the market rate for the guy or girl in the left seat. The guy or lady in the right seat is just building time in type to move to the left seat. That is just the way it works. Right seat semi sucks, left seat is where the money is once one is piloting heavy metal.
ps
I was on an Alligeant Charter Flight once. The captain was an ex Space Shuttle Pilot and on other flights the commander. Mostly white hair on this gentleman. The rules for 65 years old ATP are different for charter flights and the pilot can be older than the mandatory 65 years for retirement.
I had the luxury of chatting with this gentleman for a few minutes after landing. I may have had the best pilot in the air that day. I did ask him about his log book and how to log space flight. I really did not understand the answer. I do not think it is in the FARs.
He was a very nice man.
Great story. Thanks.
On reflection, it might have been a great and interesting job, but I decided to stay in SoCal.
Of course, I had to get out of there 12 years ago as things went south. I would be a felon now with all the new firearms directives.
“Also you would probably need a poly if not a life style polygraph where they ask you very intimate private details.”
They don’t like to you to say you are going for a polygraph. It’s an “interview”.
And yes, they WILL find out every naughty thing you have ever done.
They have a conversation with you where they ask if you’ve ever done this or that, like robbed a bank, etc. Then they strap you in and ask “Other than what you have already told me, have you ever done anything wwrroonngggg?

Everyone’s private life electronically speaking was over in the 1950s ...
Well, these days nothing is wrong. Its just an alternate lifestyle. So, you just need to squeeze your sphincter and believe, just like Peter Pan.
