When you have problems with moles, gophers and groundhogs invading your backyard, it can get out of control.
So having a good gun can be a huge help in handling these pests.
Now remember you don't need to have a big hunting rifle, you just need something for the backyard.
The following guns are ideal for backyard critter control.
Ruger 22/45 MK3
Equipped with Gemtech Alpine suppressor, Primary Arms green dot sight and Viridian C5L light/laser. This baby can has a tendecy to send squirrels and other rodents around the house into a very high rate of sudden heart attacks.
Henry Arms Classic Lever-Action .22 Rifle
Is the federal paperwork for a suppressor a pain in the arse for you? Well, pick up a Henry Classic Lever-Action .22 Rifle. Itll fire any .22 Long, .22 Long Rifle or .22 Short cartridge, meaning you can keep it a little quieter if you need to.
Ruger American Rifle
The Ruger American, a budget-friendly bolt-action rifle, is a great varmint gun that will not break the bank. With an MSRP under $500, this entry-level bolt gun has a surprising number of features, including a cold hammer-forged barrel, Marksman adjustable trigger, ergonomic, lightweight stock, and rails for mounting a scope. Read rest of the critter control guns here.
Now remember you don’t need to have a big hunting rifle ...
Yes, you do. :)
Slo-Joe Biden says a shotgun is a solution for everything.
Any .22 rimfires rifle (longer the barrel the quieter) with CB caps. Sounds like popcorn.
I have a suppressor for my 3 AR-15s, and the critters don’t know what even happened to them.
She survived with nary a scratch. Tough woman.
To easy and requires no added expense or government permission.
Plenty of problems with squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs and/ moles. Don’t think my HOA would take too kindly to any of these.
Next idea.
Ain’t paying the Feds $200 for a suppressor permit...don’t need it anyway.
I just use an old single-shot .22 rimfire with either .22 CB shorts or .22LR sub-sonics depending on the size of the critter.
For some of the two-legged “critters”, a Glock 30 Gen 4 is usually kept pretty close by.
“...Next idea....”
Maybe look into some various types of traps. There are the old fashion “kill em” kind, and the new liberal metrosexual “feel good” catch and release kind.
I have never seen anyone complaining about “critters” with any lawn or livestock worth protecting. They just wanted to kill something and play with their guns.
That being said and obvious, I did kill a squirrel yesterday. For some reason it had lost function of its front legs and was pushing itself like a sled with its hind legs with considerable pain.
I put it out of its misery with a single action .22 revolver. Poor thing.
Get a PCP air rifle in .22 cal.....they're super quiet. As a side note, here in Michigan in 2015 they were no longer considered a "firearm" grouping air guns under the broader term pneumatic guns,
I have a .177 cal Daystate Huntsman Regal which I absolutely love. It's taking its toll on the house sparrow population here.....
Yep - the CCI CB Longs are great. They're the same bullet weight and power level as the CB Cap, only loaded in a longer .22LR case so they'll feed in firearms that aren't suited to CB Caps or .22 Shorts. In a 24" or longer barrel, all you hear is the hammer or striker falling, followed by the *whump* of the projectile hitting its target. Less muzzle noise than a pneumatic or CO2 pellet rifle.
Oh Well...
OK, I got a start on the first gun, the Ruger 22/45 but no accessories. However, I don’t see how spending those bucks still can solve a problem for a critter that is rarely above ground in the moles and pocket gophers I’ve got in my yard. IOW, you gotta see ‘em to shoot’em. I have used traps in the past to some success. I really need to go with the better living through chemistry route by putting down some diazinon to eliminate the grubs that these things feed on.
I do have a problem with the occasional armadillo but then I have to deal with the carcass. Same would go with a woodchuck but I’ve not seen any of those in the yard. I’m told they are in the area and have seen photos.
+1
Remember the plastic 2 liter soda pop silencer from 35 years ago? It actually worked well for a few shots. Then the ATF placed a $200 dollar tax on the connecting piece.
You can get a beeman or other .177 or .22 air rifle with built in suppressor at wally world.
If that doesn’t cut it, you may consider traps, or cats & dogs.
For a critter ridder I prefer a Ruger SR22 with CCI Mini-Mag ammo. Unbeatable combo.
Also works well on human critters :)
