SEATTLE (AP) Your Amazon packages, which usually show up in a UPS truck, an unmarked vehicle or in the hands of a mail carrier, may soon be delivered from an Amazon van.
The online retailer, wanting more control over how its packages are delivered, is rolling out a program Thursday that lets entrepreneurs around the country launch businesses that deliver Amazon packages. They'll be able to lease blue vans with the Amazon logo stamped on it, buy Amazon uniforms for drivers and get support from Amazon to grow their business. In return, Amazon gets more ways to ship its packages to shoppers without having to rely on UPS, FedEx and other package delivery services....

Where are the fast delivery to our door drones Amazon was raving about? Nata.
I am not sure what to make of this.
When I started reading I thought “well this is new”, but it sounds a bit experimental at this point.
Amazon does not seem to be driving, at the moment.
Those aren’t even as realistic as self-driving cars.
“Those arent even as realistic as self-driving cars.”
Same liability issues.
Will they have background checks like ups and fedex drivers?
Will be interesting to see if anyone could make money at this. Hard to compete against UPS
I looked into it. You “invest” 10 grand, you lease delivery trucks, hire workers you buy their uniforms, but it’s really not a franchise you own as I understand it. They give you routes. The goal is 10 trucks, 100 drivers, per owner and your “potential earnings” could be 300 grand. Doesn’t say anything about pay, fuel costs, etc.
Will Amazon do E-verify or will Amazon allow illegal alien drivers?
/sarc - or, since its Amazon, maybe not sarcasm
I'm not so sure. UPS drivers are unionized, and work rigid routes and hours. They also must go to many places to just pick up items. Amazon delivery drivers would have none of that.
There has been an Amazon delivery service in our subdivision for a couple of years that has a non uniformed driver, driving around in a non licensed golf cart type vehicle. It is part time, fast, maneuverable, and appears to me to be quite efficient. UPS couldn't touch its cost.
Will they be unionized?
The whole thing is kinda...strange. Amazon's effectively making a delivery workforce wearing their uniforms, their logo’d delivery vans, their rules, yet absolutely not their employer.
I honestly think their strict rules including benefits is going to get a very hard look (probably during the busy holiday season) by various state labor boards, and most likely, result in them being declared the actual employer.
When an UPS truck is done, it is by GOD done !
They cannibalize to the nth degree.
It seems that Amazon is trying everything they can think of to streamline delivery. One problem is almost everybody wants next-day delivery. I don't have Amazon Prime. Because I'm willing to wait a few days for delivery, it's free.
Not sure I know what you mean. Cannibalize trucks for parts? UPS works on their own trucks?
I think this is a good, real world example of how technology eliminates jobs/changes ways of doing things, but at the same time creates new opportunities.
Many times these new opportunities create a larger number of jobs and competitive pay as well, resulting in an improved standard of living.
Channeling your inner to Q
Where will these drivers materialize from? If it were economical to do so, Amazon would cut out the middle man and do it themselves.
