Last week, Congressman John Garamendi (D- CA), the ranking Democrat on the House Subcommittee for Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, introduced The Energizing American Shipbuilding Act of 2018.
The bipartisan bill, which would require the construction of over fifty ships and the creation of thousands of maritime and mariners jobs, is being carried in the Senate by Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS).
In an interview with AJOT, Garamendi said that projections of 50 new shipbuildings by 2040 comes from the legislationwhich requires a small percentage of exported crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to be transported on U.S.-built and U.S.-flagged vessels. These ships will create jobs for U.S.shipyard workers and jobs for U.S. mariners manning the ships Based on a recent conversation with Chevron, I learned they plan to invest $30 billion more in oil production facilities in the next four years most of which will be for export. So, our projections may understate the potential.
Garamendi told AJOT he is hopeful of passage of the legislation because support is not only bi-partisan, it is bi-cameral, and support is based on broad-based support of shipbuilders, component suppliers such as propeller and crankshafts and by the maritime and shipbuilding unions and workers.
He hopes the proposed legislation will become law by the end of 2018.
Garamendi and Wicker introduced the bill at a press conference together with Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee Chairman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Seapower Committee, Congressman Rob Whitman (R-VA).
We can have the best military equipment and trained warfighters in the world, but without the sealift capacity to get them to where they need to go, it doesnt do much good, said Congressman Hunter: This bill will have strong national security implications and I applaud its introduction.
The domestic maritime industry supports hundreds of thousands of American jobs and is critical to our military readiness and national security, said Wicker. This bill would strengthen our shipbuilding industry and would recognize the importance of having more American-flagged ships to transport our growing exports of oil and natural gas. China, India, and other nations are investing heavily in their shipbuilding capacity. The United States must keep up.

I believe Wicker is GOPe . If so, he needs to be shown the door. Wicker has been MIA but now since it’s getting close to election time, he’s trying to reel in voters along the Mississippi coast.
Duncan Hunter is most definitely NOT GOPe.

There is a strong tendency to sell out America, among many on FR.
China is, as a result of this tendency of all Americans to sell out to foreign countries to manufacture things, taking over worldwide manufacturing. The result is a MASSIVE trade imbalance.
The largest in recorded history.
Trump is now, maybe, going to do something.
But FR really, really needs to stop selling out to China.

We used to be the worlds biggest maritime nation. But progressive taxes and regulations drove most of that offshore.
Heck with that.
China took them.
Let’s be honest. Well even that is not 100% correct.
China let itself be the recipient of millions of what used to be American jobs.
But the result is, millions of what used to be American jobs, are now done in a country with almost five times our population.
And a good segment of our voting population, is even now, still wanting to send even more jobs to China, from America.
Trump is focused on American jobs.
But far too many, still are ready to sell out America.
Even now.
His dad ran for president and did very poorly. I was an early supporter of his, and still to this day, wear my over ten-year-old Hunter hat.
I don’t know. Alaska crude should have been exported to Asia all along. World market. Instead WE shipped it within the US all these years with our maritime industry coming up short-more US law. Calif refineries were not designed to handle that type of crude. Now you have a California Democrat trying to out Trump Trump. Fine if it works. Are we STILL being lied to? You tell me.
I am just saying.
I think Trump should perhaps consider bringing the younger Hunter, into his cabinet as the Vice President for the next time around.
Get the guy started on his nomination, the right way.

Gerimindi is my Representative after the legislature gerrymandered Republicans out of my district. His interest in this I suspect is to increase union jobs. Instead of shipping our country’s natural wealth out of the country he should push for more refineries and fewer blends to give Americans lower fuel costs. As far as that goes a national strategic resources list should be established and reserves stockpiled so we are not at the mercy of globalized dominate sources freezing us out in times of conflict.
