Why is America's Suicide Rate Skyrocketing?

Motto: the future ain’t what it used to be.

Let me begin with some grim factoids: suicide is now the tenth leading cause of death in the United States. Every year, almost 45,000 Americans “blow their brains out” (most of the suicides involve firearms), and for every “successful” suicide, if I may use the word, 25 attempt and fail at it, fortunately. More than half suicides involve guns, hence the hyper-inflated gun crime stats used by the left to snuff the second amendment, and there are 123 suicides per day on average in the Land of the Free, Home of the Brave. White males make for 70 percent of suicides, as per 2016 data, while men overall die by suicide 3.53x more often than women, with middle aged white men in particular being susceptible to commit suicide.

“Why is America’s Suicide Rate Skyrocketing?”

Hope it’s because of Trump.

I’ve heard the uptick is since 2016. Best day ever was 11/8/2016. Is there a connection? I wonder if these people are Democrats. (I’ll say no more.)

Same reason as the spike in PTSD. Everyone under 30 is a wimp.

The two worst words in the English language when yoked: “just friends.”

Yeah, Hopelessness May be a cause. Another concept...Maybe they are bored with living. Or hows about constant pain with no cure and hopelessness. I think Robin Williams had that sort of problem. Death from Alcoholism is another form of self inflicted death. I really wish old people would go to live music rock concerts to get their energies reved up.

Fake news. Suicide has been in the top 10 things people die from for decades. Look it up.

I expect the numbers of suicides to go down with the Trump presidency,

Probably the number of overall suicides go down, but the number of celebrity suicides go up due to TDS.

A good op-ed on the topic:

The trouble with talking about the uptick in suicides as a reflection of trouble in our culture.

...As a result of the news about the suicide states, we’ve seen quite a few articles like this one making claims such as this:

But why are so many more Americans getting to this level of emotional despair than in the past? As journalist Johann Hari wrote in his best-selling book Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression — and the Unexpected Solutions, the epidemic of depression and despair in the Western World isn’t always caused by our brains. It’s largely caused by key problems in the way we live.

We exist largely disconnected from our extended families, friends and communities — except in the shallow interactions of social media — because we are too busy trying to “make it” without realizing that once we reach that goal, it won’t be enough.

All of these observations are useful and true, but there’s one thing everyone seems to be ignoring, something I wrote about in yesterday’s piece but no one so far seems to have commented on. So I thought I’d emphasize it here: the rise in suicide rates follows a fall, and the present-day rates in the US mimic the rates in the 1950’s through the 1990’s.

You can look at the charts if you don’t believe me. I linked to them yesterday and I’ll link to them again, but I wasn’t able to embed them here when I tried, now I’m having trouble getting there at all because it seems to suddenly be behind a paywall. Here’s the chart ( Link to chart: https://www.statista.com/statistics/187465/death-rate-from-suicide-in-the-us-since-1950/) has paywall.... for the rates in the US from the 1950s till 2015; click on “Death rate for suicide in the US 1950-2015 and it indicates that suicide rates from the middle to the end of the 20th century were similarly high, and then there was a dip. The present rise seems to be restoring suicide rates to something similar to the older levels. The recent report (link to recent report: https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2018/p0607-suicide-prevention.html) uses rates from 2015 and 2016, which corresponds pretty much to the endpoint of the chart I just linked.

Anyone trying to analyze and understand the phenomenon of suicide needs to take the actual statistics into account.

The “I” in this article is the author of the blog, not me.

Antidepressants have been widely used for the last fifty years or more. Please explain why you think they suddenly have become agents of suicide.

twice as many suicides than homicides<

twice as many suicides as homicides

It would be nice if English proficiency were a requirement for journalistic writing.

Healthcare providers, police and fire/rescue, mental health clinics and soicail workers .... and family members all have incentive to hide the truth.

We don’t really know the strength of the correlations. And of course, correlation is not causation. But it sure would help to know accurate correlations.

What is the correlation with each type of drug? I am biased on this. My family physician had his psychiatrist friend prescribe me Prozac. I took it as prescribed for about 10 days. My consulting client told me to go back to my consulting company office. My friends there said “Bob, I can’t believe you would do something like that.” Apparently my anti-social action was so abhorrent that they could not even speak of it and to this day I have no idea what got me canned. Needless to say, I quit Prozac cold turkey immediately.

What is the correlation with different religious practices? Between nominally religious and dedicated religious? Between atheist left and atheist right? Between Mormons and Jehovah’s Witness? Between Jew and Muslim? Where are belief (or lack there of)?

What is the correlation with employment? Unemployment? Heavy school load? Light school load?

Break up with romantic friend? Break up/split with parents, spouse, children?

Non-traditional identities, gender confusion? Astrology?

That is just a start to thousands of possible correlations.

And all we have is biased studies more interested in being either dramatic or PC in order to get published and not to shed light on the topic. And of course, we have a lot of anecdotes, some of which are actually factual.
