Big brands like Toys R Us and Bon-Ton liquidating their businesses might paint a gloomy picture for the retail industry, but smaller brands say there couldn't be a better time to grow.
Direct-to-consumer businesses like Bonobos and Warby Parker have paved the way from online stores to bricks and mortar. Others are following in droves and could help fill the glut of vacant real estate on the market in the U.S.
Like Warby Parker and Bonobos, these up-and-coming brands are being cautious, opening locations at a measured pace and setting up primarily where they have large followings online. In turn, mall and shopping center owners are all vying for their business. But many upstart retailers are also generally tougher negotiators than traditional ones and come to real estate owners with unique requests as the companies map out growth.
It's more common today, for example, for lease deals with online retailers to extend for just 18 to 24 months, also offering an optional kick-out clause where the retailer can terminate a contract early, Brandon Hoffman, a senior associate at Ashkenazy Acquisitions, said at the annual ICSC RECon conference in Las Vegas this week....

Toys R Us is restructuring not going away.
Yeah that’s what they said about Montgomery Wards, Circuit City, Sears and Kmart, JCP and how many others?
I see the author must have invested in these companies and she is now trying to sell this to the public.
Haha!

What?!? You’ve never seen the business Juggernauts that are Bonobos and Warby Parker?!?
There’s a Daiso not far from here. They moved into the US with a handful in California (fact check - Washington state was actually first), but have quickly spread from the Pacific coast area to Texas after the first one opened in this state about a year and a half ago. There are around 60 stores in the US now compared to 2800 in Japan, and probably close to 1000 others scattered around the world.
Untuckit should be out of business based on the annoying commercial and leftwing politics.
Have you heard of Bonobos parent company? A small town retailer named Walmart.
Looks like they have a couple of outlets near here in hip areas.
Looks like there is a Warby Parker near one of the Bonobos.

Oh, so it’s Walmart. Glad all the hipsters can shop with the rest of us now without feeling bad about themselves for looking down on us. Got it.
You may be right, the stories i had read talked about some closings and restructuring, as that was what was initially reported. But then i saw this:

Looks like they are totaly liquidating everything. No stores remaining open.
The last time the wife and I went was Christmas five years ago, the aisles were blocked with crap, employees too busy holding conversations to assist and they played crappy hip hop music really loud.........AT CHRISTMAS! Toys R Us went out of their way to self destruct and I will not miss them.

I remember a small town store called WALTON’S 5&10. West side of the Square in Bentonville, AR. Any kin? ;-D
And Ben Franklin, Coast to Coast, etc., folded.
