Dead malls are popping up all over the states, particularly in the Midwest, where economic decline has sped up the "going out of business" process. This map, put together by a Dead Malls Enthusiasts Facebook group, shows that well.
As Americans are faced with multiple shopping options and more stores are leaving malls, it should be interesting to see if malls and mall culture will survive.
What you are about to see is what happens when malls are abandoned. It's apocalyptic and really, really creepy....

“Teens” rampage through malls. Not having to every worry about joining the workforce, and not having the habit of studying, millions of “teens” go hang out at the mall. In contact with each other by means of iphones that you paid for, they swoop down on places and act like the savages that they are, knowing full well that there are no consequences for their actions.
So I stopped going to malls several years ago.
The dying one is, the newer one is not.
I don’t shop at either.
The reason why two malls in the Sacramento, CA area—Arden Fair and Westfield Roseville Galleria—thrive is the presence of Nordstroms and an Apple Store.
Bingo. Terminal for the feral yutes.
Okay, but the images are stark and interesting. But I understand.
One New Years I took my kids out to a late night movie for a treat- The plae had a dozen cop cars parked outside and at least 3 dozen officers inside, and a ton of ‘feral youth’ wandering around.
Inside the movie theater it was crazy- they seemed to think the movie required audience participation in the dialogue.
After we left (thankfully with a cop who watched us out to the parking lot) one of my unusually silent children said ‘that was weird’
Never again.
Interesting-——the enclosed malls appear to be a thing of the past.
.
The outdoor ones are usually called Shopping Centers or Town Centers instead of Malls.
Right-and even when they were the place to shop-malls were/are depressing
Even the very upscale Mall at Short Hills in NJ has 21 vacant spaces. Granted, many of these are being refitted for new tenants, but this is a record number of vacancies at one time and looks rather shabby.
Yeah, but I heard starsux it gonna put up signs about “no sleeping, snorting, shooting or dope smoking”. That should take care of it. Well until someone files a suit.
You got that right. I havent been to a mall in a decade. Too many violent feral youth.”
FYI all: In Politically Correct speak, violent feral youth, especially of the Amish variety, are said to be “vibrant”. The noun form describing them is VIBRANTS.
1) Rents are too damned high
2) Who wants to walk around a mall infiltrated by large packs of inner city thugs.
Thanks for sharing.
I never go to malls. Seriously, I bet less than an hour total in the past 5 years has been spent in shopping malls.
It seems like these buildings could be purchased fairly cheap, and maybe reconfigured into schools? Just a thought, knowing that the school districts would not be happy if they cannot build NEW buildings of their own.
Too many violent feral youth.”
...that’s the biggest reason. Amazon, Walmart etc as well. But decent people just don’t feel safe. There’s a mall in the swankier, higher money area of where I live that’s becoming a sh&&hole from “violent” interlopers that live nowhere near this mall. They have attitudes and looks on their faces as if to say...”what are you going to do about it?” There’s nothing a mall can do.
nailed it.
“The outdoor ones are usually called Shopping Centers or Town Centers instead of Malls”
Or strip malls.
.
That’s exactly what ruined them initially.
Yutes gotta have someplace to play.
The Chicago area is home to dying or dead malls. Gangs and gathering places for free-loading youths destroyed some of these malls. Having to pass through a metal detector to enter you know it isn’t safe. That Mall was demolished.
