If you like nuts, Trader Joe's is the way to go. Raw nuts. Blanched nuts. Nuts with seasoning on them. Nuts in general. Nuts.
I like the raw nuts. Raw cashews. Raw hazelnuts. Raw almonds. All good for health and general well-being.
But first, the train. I work in Manhattan so I need to take the train to get into work from Connecticut. Connecticut. Where they tax you much. Why did I move here? Well maybe it's better than living in New Jersey or Long Island. Much more trees in Connecticut, with the many rivers, brooks and lakes. Houses are better here too. With lots of white on the interior, with sliding French doors, big windows and cathedral ceilings. All painted white. Something about white and Connecticut. Don't quote me on that.
So the long train ride in from the Westport station. About an hour and 5 minutes on the Metro North to Grand Central. Conductors asking to see your ticket (now a dancing image on a cellphone rather than a paper ticket). Conductor just nods at that and moves on down the train. Some people still use the paper tickets that need to get punched but basically most are on the app and buried in their cellphones and iPads the entire way down and back.
I do like the train ride. You get used to it. Though you do have to stand close to edge of platform in Westport to get a good seat. You have to pretty much spot your seat at the train comes to a stop and then jostle others out of the way when the doors open and grab that seat before others do. The middle seat in a three seater is always the worst. Avoid that at all costs. Try to get the window seat in a three-seater. Definitely. The two-seater side should be avoided whenever possible because you usually have a heavy set person as a seat mate crowding you out of your space. I hate it when you have to spend an hour pushed up against a heavy set human being. I like it when a slim women sits next to me in a two seater. That is not so bad. But definitely I'd rather be in the three seater by the window with the middle seat open. That is the best ride.
But lets get back to the nuts at Trader Joes!
So then, I work over on Lexington Avenue midtown, just a few blocks from Grand Central and maybe a 10 minute brisk walk over to Trump tower on 5th and 57th whereby you are just a stone's throw from the beginning of Central Park. If you are ever there, never buy food from the food carts and never, ever take a horse-pulled carriage ride. Colossal ripoff.
But back to the nuts at Trader Joes. From my office, I walk one block east over to 3rd Avenue and then head down about 25 blocks to E. 32nd Street where there is a cavernous Trader Joes. Have to take the escalator! Then you have nuts, nuts, nuts.
I come out of there with six pounds or so of nuts. Cashews, almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, you name it. I do like my nuts. I then take them home and put them in little baggies (snack bags) which takes me well over an hour to pack them all. 180 calories per bag (about 30g of nuts). I have at least two bags of nuts per day. Sometimes more. Then when they run out, I go to Trader Joe's to get more.
So one day, I'm coming out of there with my nuts and it is pouring rain. I'm 25 blocks from my office. So do I take a taxi? Do I try to take the Lexington Ave subway (4,5,6 trains)? No! I walk the 25 blocks. I get totally drenched. I get to my office and co-workers ask me if it's raining out. I say yes, it's raining out as I squeeze the excess moisture out of my suit. But I got my nuts. I certainly have my nuts.
Hawaiian shirts. If you wear a Hawaiian shirt into Trader Joe’s, they will think you work there and ask you what aisle the almond butter is in. I say aisle 5, to be consistent.
25 Blocks walking in the rain?
OK, you are what you eat. LOL
I’m semi retired. All I wear are Hawaiian Shirts.
(Yes, I still wear Pants)
I missed the punch line ...
(Let me be the first to thank you)
Trader Joes nuts. Worth the trip. Expecially the coconut cashews.
Im retired. I wear are Hawaiian Shirts when I dress up.
Much appreciated.
Yer nuts!
Some might think he is nuts..
You can buy nuts on Amazon. Just as fresh.
And they bring them to you.
LOL
So, you have wet nutz?
Little trick I learned to avoid the weather as much as possible whether it’s hot cold snow sleeting is when I’m going from Uptown to downtown Midtown vice versa just to walk through buildings there just open
Liked your story though
I pack my nuts all the time.
>>>I come out of there with six pounds or so of nuts. Cashews, almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, you name it<<<
You must have one heck of a Nutsack.
Love their chicken soup dumplings! They have GREAT deals and chocolate covered nuts, too.
There was an old grocer millionaire in Knoxville, TN named Cas Walker...This is back in the ‘40’a through the ‘70’s...
He had ads on live TV about his stores and products...
One show he sponsored was Mull’s Singing Convention on Sunday mornings...Reverend J. Basil Mull and Mrs. Mull were their own MC’s...
One commercial went like this:
“Cas Walker has the biggest and best nuts in town...Ain’t that right Mrs. Mull???’
Oh Lordy, you are right, J. Basil!!!”
True story...
(Look up Cas Walker on Youtube)
“So the long train ride in from the Westport station. About an hour and 5 minutes on the Metro North to Grand Central.”
Some people think that riding on a commuter train is gay.
I’m not sure either way.
As I did back in the 80s.
“Trader Joes nuts. Worth the trip. Expecially the coconut cashews.”
And then there are the nuts that shop there.
