A 1958 Corvette was my college ride. Now it is a Chevy Silverado 1-ton Dually Quad Cab (I have a 5th wheel...) Two other Vettes, a ‘69 Mustang 351 fastback and a bunch of others in between. No self driving cars for me....
Different story for my two sons - both living in Portland - one just bought a new Subaru and the other mostly rides the bus. I guess the love of cars is not genetic....or maybe it’s the water in Portland.

"And of course the ultimate Motown car song, Aretha Franklins Freeway of Love (in her Pink Cadillac)"
Good song, but I prefer Dwight Yokum's, "Long White Cadillac". Great cruising song with all the windows rolled down on a Hot August Night. So looking forward to warm days/nights to pull Justine (my 58 Impala) out of the garage storage and head down the coast and to car meets.

My favorite Motown car song:
Going to the Hop--The Satintones (1960)
It ain't got no brakes,
And when it's moving, it shakes.
It ain't got no top,
And I don't know how to stop.
But I'm going to the hop
In my raggedy jalop'!

Great article!
However "The Fast and The Furious" movies have been very popular with the younger generations, so maybe all is not lost with them?

why would you climb into a robocar and take yourself hostage on purpose? Same reason that they bug their own homes on purpose.

In the year 4545
You ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to chew
Nobody's gonna look at you
In the year 5555
Your arms hangin' limp at your sides
Your legs got nothin' to do
Some machine's doin' that for you
In the year 6565
You won't need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too

“See...the...USA in your Chevrolet America is asking you to call” I get that earworm in my head whenever I drive around in the 64.

“It’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowing down to take a look at me”
Can’t have that any more. Maybe this:
“It’s a female gendered person of unknown orientation, my preferred deity, in a robot Ford being reprogrammed for a possible passenger pickup”
Ruins the song.

And now, in the wake of the first fatal accident involving an autonomous vehicle, theyre deadly as well. Just like cars with drivers.
If we're going to ban driveless cars because of one fatality and condemn the whole lot of them, then all the rest of the automobiles on the road need to be likewise condemned and taken off the road.

Once driver-less cars become the norm what will local communities do to make up all that cash they used to get from citations?
I don’t think that driver-less cars could be programmed to break any rules of the road.
Go for the tax per mile driven?
Raise gas tax thru the roof?
Increase registration fees?
Huge tire tax?
Come up with some kind of “Road Subscription” to have access to any road?
Unintended consequences seen from a mile away.

What red-blooded American male, when he has his first job, does not think about the first brand new car he will buy?
More chances than not it will be something with some power, something he can control. It might be a truck, but it will have some oomph somewhere.
Anyone who would like to drive an "driverless" car is really just someone who would like a chauffeur.
