"Mind over Matter" Stephen Hawking; An Obituary by his friend Dr. Roger Penrose
The Guardian ^ | March 14, 2018 | Dr. Roger Penrose

Posted on 03/14/2018 8:19:50 AM PDT by Voption

The image of Stephen Hawking – who has died aged 76 – in his motorized wheelchair, with head contorted slightly to one side and hands crossed over to work the controls, caught the public imagination, as a true symbol of the triumph of mind over matter. As with the Delphic oracle of ancient Greece, physical impairment seemed compensated by almost supernatural gifts, which allowed his mind to roam the universe freely, upon occasion enigmatically revealing some of its secrets hidden from ordinary mortal view.

Np. I do share your views. Generally FR used to be above excessively attacking dying and dead people but not anymore.

STEVEN HAWKING IS NOW A BIBLE BELIEVER.

HE BELIEVES THERE IS A HEAVEN

AND HE KNOWS THERE IS A HELL.

...

Virtue signalling, now brought to you with the caps lock key.

Personally, I try not to confuse his political-bent with his fundamental contributions to Physics

How can you separate the two when he used his physics reputation to advance the political BS? That's like saying Pol Pot loved his mother.

Everyone has opinions, but not everyone has specific expertise, even if they have PhD’s in Maths & Physics.

And yet he used his position as a respected physicist to promulgate an attack on our duly elected president (see quote in post3). When you use your reputation in one field to spout nonsense in another, you damage your reputation in both fields. TO hell with Hawking - he was just another Brit liberal who thought he knew what's best for the USA.

Roger Penrose is a Platonist and I see the classical reference, however, perhaps a more fitting one is that Hawking is like the slave boy in Plato’s Ion. He doesn’t know what he is doing and gets some right answers, however, he’s really in the dark with other things... things concerning black holes, climate change and God.

I think as long as there was somebody talking to him, life was good. There is a Pink Floyd song or piece of music where this comes up... the importance of talk. And it’s sad that as an atheist, death for Hawking would mean the ultimate loneliness in terms of not having someone to talk to... and you couldn’t even talk to yourself because there is no YOU. Ultimately, it’s just a cold wind sweeping through the universe...

Hawking was quite intelligent no doubt and tortured by a debilitating disease. He parlayed his physics and theoretical astronomical knowledge into becoming a spokesperson for the liberal leftist agenda and views. RIP wherever you are....

I have always believed hawking was used as a mouthpiece for any and all lefty causes. I mean, the guy couldn’t even blink by himself. We are to believe these “amazing theories “ are rattling around in the mans head and being put forth by computer??? Nope. Ain’t buying it. Never have. The left has used him to advance their version of science and put all those words in his mouth.

IMHO Hawkings would have been wiser to have stuck with physics and left metaphysics alone. As it was, he famously and frequently denied the existence of God. I expect he knows better now.

What a courageous man, politics aside. Many with his disability would just have given up on life.

Feynman was intellectually honest; and when he got into a philosophical argument with some rabbinical students about minutia of how to use technology to observe the Sabbath (and they kicked his ass), he had the humility to acknowledge in public that they had beat him.
