Gun industry groups insist the legal requirement for semi-auto handguns to mark cartridges with a microscopic array of characters, that identify the make, model and a serial number of the pistol upon firing is impossible to accomplish in actual field conditions. (Photo: UCDavis)
Californias high court is set to hear arguments in a long running case brought by firearms industry groups who say the states microstamping requirement is unattainable.
The case, challenging the states 2007 unsafe handgun modification requirements, is set for arguments in a Los Angeles court on April 4.
Plaintiffs, the National Shooting Sports Foundation and the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute, insist the legal requirement for semi-auto handguns to mark cartridges with a microscopic array of characters, that identify the make, model and serial number of the pistol upon firing is impossible to accomplish and has only worked to artificially limit choices available to California gun buyers. At stake is the ability to purchase newly manufactured semi-auto handguns in the state.
Since going into effect this ill-advised law has banned the introduction of any new models of handguns into California reducing consumers ability to purchase the best and most advanced handguns on the market while doing nothing to improve public safety, said Michael Bazinet, an NSSF spokesman in a statement to Guns.com.
The suit was originally brought by the trade groups in 2014, arguing that the technology was unproven in actual field conditions and easy for criminals to defeat.

A shame it can’t. It would help big time in police departments trying to match a casing with a weapon. Could solve a ton of murders and other crimes.
How would it solve crimes when a stolen/untraceable gun is used, which is the usual M.O. with bad guys?
Well of course it's unattainable. They knew that, and were counting on it remaining so. It's a stupid concept as long as revolvers exist (no case ejection).
Therefore, no new handgun sales. The whole thing is just a thinly disguised gun ban
“How would it solve crimes when a stolen/untraceable gun is used, which is the usual M.O. with bad guys?”
Or it could be used to frame someone.
Yes, if I remember correctly, Maryland uses it to solve all of their semi-auto gun crimes. Whoops. Maryland spent 5 years and $15M and didn’t solve one crime. Oh, never mind.
Yup, the slippery slope..
Not at all when you consider that we have people like Maxine Waters, Jerry Brown and Chuckwad Schumer in elected office.
‘A shame it cant. It would help big time in police departments trying to match a casing with a weapon. Could solve a ton of murders and other crimes.”
Forgive my rudeness, but no, hell no.
To tag a specific serial numbered gun to a perpetrator would mean the gun would have to be registered in order for the number to match up to a person.
Now a criminal will not register a gun, so this law is stupid even if it’s possible to imprint all that data on a spent cartridge.
I can think of a whole host of problems, false arrests and convictions being one of them that could arise from such a dumba$$ law.
This is a clear infringement on the 2A.
“””insist the legal requirement for semi-auto handguns to mark cartridges with a microscopic array of characters, that identify the make, model and serial number of the pistol upon firing is impossible to accomplish
Ya think” So somehow you would have to buy ammo that is loaded and marked specifically for a certain pistol”
That will $12,000.00 for that box of ammo, sir. please pay at the checkout.
You are forgetting that criminals will alter their behavior in response to laws. Possible counter measures include:
- grinding the head of the firing pin to remove the stamp
- picking up your brass or use a revolver
- carrying a hand full of brass from a local gun range and dumping at the scene.
- using reloaded brass
- swamping out the firing pin
I guess I didn’t think about the registration part. I was looking at it from a “clean” crime....where the police find the gun on the person who shot a person. They are the vast majority of murders. This whole “stealing a gun” to shoot someone is very rare unless it is a family member and the gun is in the house.
Ugh. I guess that is why there are so many unsolved murders. It is impossible to beat the killer.
The bad guys can just use a revolver. Problem solved.
> “The bad guys can just use a revolver. Problem solved.”
Revolvers don’t look kewl held sideways to fire.
True dat.
This is more proof that the modern politician is a brilliant confidence trickster but is incredibly stupid when it comes to understanding technology, economics, or human behavior beyond greed and fear. Do "liberals" (leftists) support socialism because they're looking to be important in a world where they find themselves without skill, value, or meaning?
Going to the range and policing up YOUR brass to then seed the crime scene with.
“Incredible that this is even being considered doable.”
What was doable, what the goal was, was to limit sales of new semiautos in California. Mission accomplished. If micro-stamping actually worked, they’d have to invent another trick. Maybe require that the name and home address of the owner be stamped, and changed every time the pistol changes hands? lol
