UV Lamps May Soon Make Our Buses and Trains Completely Germ Free

Public spaces such as subways, suburban trains, schools, or waiting rooms are breading grounds for germs that - especially in the fall and winter - contribute enormously to the spread of influenza and other types of viruses. Like many other illnesses, the flu is transmitted via droplet infections. That is, when talking, coughing, and sneezing infected individuals spray tiny droplets into common airspace, putting those around them at risk.

For a long time, scientists have been looking for ways to keep the air in public spaces "germ-free" - without endangering people with harmful chemicals.

Researchers at the University of Columbia in New York may have succeeded in doing so as they demonstrate in this video.

First of all just because you don’t get germs at the hospital or on a subway doesn’t mean that you will never get germs. They are just trying to get rid of some of the germs in the most worst places. I think it is an interesting idea and if it works for even a percentage of germs, why not?

And there is no way that a lamp can eliminate all germs.

I just watched a piece on my local news about a device that is supposed to sterilize personal use products, one in particular being a cell phone.

They swabbed it after use (coughing on it while using), then placed it in the sterilizer for the recommended amount of time, swabbed it immediately after removal and cultivated both swabs on petris.

After the appropriate incubation period, both petris were checked...and germ/bacteria growth was pretty much identical.

Conclusion: Don't waste your money on a personal use device sterilizer...they don't work, period.

And all of the one's that I have seen of this nature work off of UV light.

The only one I've ever seen that was truly effective was a sonic jewelry cleaner that also used a liquid solution.

Wouldn't recommend that for a phone.

UV works in the correct application, but the size of the lamps required would not be household friendly and would subject the family to other dangers that would require special glasses, clothing, etc.

Just wipe it down with good old fashioned Pine-Sol, or Mr. Clean...I guess.

I buy the 100 ct alcohol preps you can find next to the diabetic supplies. Wipe down your phone and computer keyboard once or twice a week. It will air dry in under 10 seconds.

I was on a cruise last year and every time I passed by the hand sanitizer dispenser I squirted the liquid antibacterial on my hands. After the cruise I ended up in bed for two days because my immune system was weakened as a result of my sanitizer abuse. I learned the lesson and now would pass by the sanitizer dispensers and use soap and water instead.

We'll replace the damage those chemicals do with skin cancer and cataracts...

I am thinking is it a good goal for the humanity to make our lives completely germ-free? Or is it even possible?

Thats one of the problems for "white" (Western) people. It may be the cause of a couple of things. One is an increase in allergies, and another is a decreased resistance to things that don't bother other cultures. Think of the Mexicans (in Mexico) who can drink their water without melting away on the toilet a day later. Also, ever seen a Mexican with allergies? Its rare. Our super-clean lifestyle has led to a type of environmental weakness.

It’s been said that those working in schools get more illnesses in their 1st three years of employ, but after that they experience a lesser rate of illnesses than the general public.

It's true. Those of us who work with reservoirs of communicable disease tend to get less sick with colds/flu over time.

This is news? UV light has been used in water treatment for ages. Yeah, I’m absolutely sure.

I always thought UV was standard on HVAC systems in hospitals.

eliminates up to 99.9% of mold spores in your HVAC system and kills up to 87% of certain airborne bacteria passed by the system.
