Think about any business you frequent: a coffee shop, supermarket, etc. Do business owners employ people they really don't need to keep the company running? Probably not but for the most part, when it comes to this looming "government shutdown", we're dealing with people whose absence really won't do much to bring the nation to a grinding halt.
If you listen to Democrats, the children of illegal aliens are worth inconveniencing the American people and federal employees over, and while some very good people are included within the "non essential" ranks, we also know there are many who are just doing their "20" so they can get the taxpayer-funded pension and customer service is an inconvenience; some of the spending decisions by some of these "non essential" is a scandalous misuse of taxpayer money and to be frank, many wouldn't be missed.

The reason politicians try to avoid shutdowns or only have short-term (1-3 days) is that they do not want the general populace to realize we do not need many of those government agents/agencies.
Essential services still go on.
I hope the Rats shut things down and Trump jujutsu’s it like Reagan did the aircraft controllers strike. Popcorn with extra butter!

I think if you could ever go thirty days straight with a shut-down...most everyone would then ask if you need 75-percent of the employees.
I’ve been in the military and the GS world, and seen the various angles of the overall problem. Probably 10-percent of the whole civilian force in DC are non-productive. They could pass from the face of this Earth tomorrow and their office wouldn’t really miss anything. This is a group of people who’ve established themselves....have a little empire...doing practically nothing but drawing a check and attending meetings.

10%. Haha. 45-65% easily. DOD employees are feeding the slow return on taxpayers dollars. Sorry but true. I could cut 35-75% based on requirements alone. Give me a reqiuirement and hold me only to that requirement without all the mafias and I can get capability out better and faster much cheaper. I’m a DOD developer not a profit motivated contractor. Nothing wrong with them, because we all want the best but damn there is a bunch of BS illities in DOD.

True, but a good number of the DoD civilian employees are at least deploying, providing some service to the soldiers in the field.
Look at some place like EPA or Department of Education.
Not one single position in either of those departments actually cleaning up a mess or teaching a child. It is ALL a bureaucracy and could disappear tomorrow and leave not a ripple.
Under the Bushes and Clintons and Obamas, the most corrupt government employees have been risen to the top of these empires and mottled into the government.
They love the idea of removing “non-essential” employees, because they have already placed handfuls of key employees beneath them as essential to cover their corruption and favor the use of contractors to perform as much governmental work as possible.
Their corrupt mechanisms with some contractors have been honed so that the financial trails are reinforced from bottom to top, to all elements of checks and balances of procurement, and environments of the contractors being selected.
They promote whistleblower protection to encourage those who might find actionable evidence, to expose themselves before their systems of corruption are too exposed. This affords the corrupt system time to counteract those who might expose their corruption without losing control of their corrupted empire.
When “non-essential” employees are furloughed, the essential employees simply fall back on their requirements to procure additional replacement service via their corrupted contracted mechanisms. They typically require 3x the cost of normal “non-essential” costs to perform the documented effort by contracted methods.
Additionally, during the times of “lean” resources, the corrupt “essential” mechanisms are working in a busier environment with less resources to hold them accountable for inefficient policies and procurement.
If you really want to remove non-essential employees, look to the ones who have become the wealthiest, drive the nicest cars, have surrounded themselves by cliques to advance their positions using faux professional credentials, and have not had to work with extremely lean budgets and still produce.
They’ve risen to the top and they know they are corrupt, but have been so successful in stealing their resources, that they actually begin to believe their lies and aren’t satiated with what they have stolen in their corruption.
The only good on the present staffing is that the most corrupt have been elevated to the top and have become more densely populated in the higher echelons. They are attracted to apparent worldly power, now making it easier to identify and remove them. Before they are removed, I suspect they will cause the removal of the most selfless and efficient personnel who are able to persevere, in order to protect their empires.
As with all things in life, the only real solution is to first live through faith in Christ. Anything other than this, is at best, simply good for nothingness.

I have had similar actual experiences. My take is the problem is upper management allowing this. I worked in a shop where mid-level supervisors watched porn, slept, drove around drinking in military housing, played cards, anything but work. When their equipment went to hell due to lack of maintenance they’d hire a contract. I’m not making this up.
There’s a good percentage of the civilian federal workforce that do work, they are good people. In the shop above they were shunned.
IMO the federal workforce needs to be thinned with an effective appraisal system that actually identifies people that are useless. This overhaul needs to start with replacing upper management.
Food stamp money still goes out, some to illegals.
The troops don’t get paid until its over.

The ‘essential personnel only’ is the same as saying ‘no employees but the person who turns the heat on and off in the building and checks the plumbing for leaks’ rather than labeling any one who does the daily mission of the organization.
I agree with those who say that the government can and should be trimmed, but to think that the ‘essential personnel only’ designation actually applies to folks who perform the daily mission is a false impression.
Many years ago, on active duty, I was assigned to the Army Operations Center Watch Office (it operated 24/7/365, 12 hour shifts) in the Pentagon. The ten of us were “essential personnel,” the remainder of the Army staff sections were not on the “essential personnel” list for when the government was closed for weather or for budget reasons. All of us were selected for competency, but there was no way we could have run the entire Army on a daily basis if all of the other Army staff and civilians were fired because they were not ‘mission essential.’
Nonessential employees are mainly make-work for the unmotivated and parasites. It is truly pathetic how many government “workers” are unessential. Fire them all.
Likely 75% of govt employees are non essential. That’s the problem.
Non essentials are for the most part the worker bees.
That’s exactly right; many government workers are simply affirmative-action wealth re-distribution - nothing else.
