Most likely people under age 40 have no idea who John Denver was. He had a string of pop hits. Then he died in a airplane crash in some sort of experimental plane? He might have been a goofy granola-eating liberal but he did write some pretty good songs in the "folk-rock" style back in the 1970s.
His first big success was writing a song called "Leaving On A Jet Plane" which was a big hit for Peter, Paul & Mary, another group of granola eating liberals.
His real life name was Henry John Deutschendorf Jr.
Yikes, that's a mouthful.
I remember him in a movie with George Burns. I think it was called "Oh God" or something like that. Back in the late 1970s. Not a bad film.
It's just weird that he dropped off the face of the earth. Nobody remembers him.
"Annie's Song" is my favorite song from him. I remember hearing that song on the radio the day that Richard Nixon resigned the presidency. I will always associate that song with Richard Nixon resigning.
It was a kit or experimental plane, if memory serves.

I sure remember him. He had a lot of great hits.
“Rocky mountain high” probably his biggest. Love the transcendent, almost spiritual lyrics. “I was born in the summer of my 27th year, going home to a place I’d never been before”
It became the anthem of the environmentalists.
I also like “Sweet Surrender” and “Annie’s song”.
A great poet, composer and singer.
Denver wrote about the Rocky Mountains and he was an alleged conservationist, self proclaimed. Following one of the gas shortages, Denver had his own private gas station built on his property.
He was a blatant hypocrite.
Charlie Rich did not appear to think very highly of John Denver.
He was just “plain people”. Very nice, polite and a most gracious guest. He pretty much became one of the family at my aunts house....red
He died before the opportunity to see him live ever arose. I was in graduate school at the time.
I love his music; one song that no one has mentioned is his rendition of Today.
In college, it was James Taylor. My friends devised a rule - when trying to pick-up a girl, always act like you love James Taylor
I had the pleasure of attending two of his concerts. One of my all time favorite musicians.
My favorite is, “Back Home Again”.
What makes that clip from “What About Bob?” so funny is I remember in the 70’s hearing people actually talking about Neil Diamond being the grounds for divorce. I thought I was in some kind of alternate universe.
You’re a moron. he was an environmentalist... not a Luddite. He wasn’t 10% of the radical that modern “environmentalists” are. He was very capitalist.
When I was a kid in the 70s, I went to church with his parents. He came to our church a couple of times a sang.

It was his own ultralight. He was doing what he loved to do, but he died too young. He was a talented musician and song writer with a unique, free spirited, uplifting style. I agree his songs do not seem to get a lot of play time. Too bad.
Song was written by Bill and Kathy Danoff who lived in DC at the time, and should have looked a map... cause they was close. Hats off to WV-ians— they are tough resourceful people who have been put through a lot, courtesy of John. D. Rockefeller.
