Probably not the scenario to be in for a hiker, but what if youre on a hike. And, you get this feeling that something is near you, not by another human but by a pack of howling coyotes.
When we hear coyotes howling its usually from a safe distance.
How would you handle a pack of coyotes howling closer to you?
Most of the time when Im on a hike, I carry a pistol and depending on the state that allows me to carry my rifle. (AR)
In this video a hiker is unarmed on a hiking trail with coyotes nearby, how would you react?
Heres the excerpt from Jessica Kirsh Youtube:
This is raw, uncut footage I captured with my GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition on my very first solo sunset hike as an Arizona resident. All of the sudden on my way back down a trail on Lookout Mountain ? in Phoenix, I found myself surrounded by howling coyotes in every direction! ?
Now at this point, I had only lived in the desert for a little over a year. So this was my first experience hearing coyotes howl this intensely, where I wasnt in the safety of my fenced in backyard.
Watch me try to be as stealth as possible getting back to my car parked at the trail head! See the full surrounded by coyote video here.
Coyotes don’t howl. They yip.
They yip when they have caught a prey.
Coyotes are most dangerous when you cannot hear them.
Make a lot of noise and it will scare the coyotes away.
No biggie.
I have coyotes in my back yard.
I never hike or even go for a run without a handgun Never For this very reason
I would far rather face a mountain lion than a pack of coyotes. Singly a coyote is not a problem but you seldom encounter just one
Wrong, just yesterday we saw two coyotes in our front yard. They eventually left our yard heading south. I posted about this experience on a neighborhood website and it seems many around here have seen coyotes. We’ve lived here seventeen years and this is the first we’ve seen coyotes. We have deer, fox, geese and other wildlife but I don’t know what to think about coyotes.
I think the ones in our front yard last night must have been of the eastern variety as I was surprised at how large they were.
Point is I wouldn’t worry about coyotes attacking humans very much.
Haha, got it. Tks!
BTW coyotes in the burbs too.
All of the ranchers thought about this amazing idea for a couple of minutes. Finally an old fellow wearing a big cowboy hat in the back of the conference room stood up, tipped his hat back and said; "Son, I don't think you understand our problem here... these coyotes ain't fuckin' our sheep... they're eatin' 'em!"
The meeting never really got back to order. . .
