Iranian Protests Resonating In Russia, Caucasus And Central Asia
Eurasia Review ^ | 1/2/2018 | A. Shmulyevich and P. Goble

Posted on 01/01/2018 6:34:34 PM PST by GoldenState_Rose

The outcome of the events in Iran remains far from clear, with the possibilities ranging from the restoration of the power of the existing government to its weakening to its complete overthrow, Avraam Shmulyevich says, with all but the first certain to have a dramatic impact in the post-Soviet space...

On the one hand, the current Tehran government is one of Russia’s few allies in the world and that is a matter of concern for Putin. “Note that Russian television isn’t saying anything about the events in Iran, and this is very indicative,” the analyst continues.

The Iranian events will affect “not only the Russian Federation,” of course. They will resonate in Central Asia and in the South Caucasus, “above all in Azerbaijan.” If the ayatollahs fall, that will lead people in both of those places and in the North Caucasus to think about what they might do to get rid of their current rulers.

“Such thoughts may arise also in other Islamic regions of Russia, above all in Tatarstan, and this may accelerate the process of the separation of national borderlands from Russia,” Shmulyevich argues.

He continues: “If the Iranian revolution turns out to be successful, then Russia will lose those remnants of its influence which it has in Syria and in the region as a whole. This will be a strong shock on Putin’s self-esteem and his foreign policy because the only ally he has is Iran.” Moreover, a change in Iran “will strengthen Turkey’s position in its talks with Russia.”

Moreover, if the Iranian events produce regime change there, this could “push Russia’s Muslim regions, above all in the North Caucasus, to move more actively toward independence and threaten the pro-Russian regimes in Central Asia,” as well as creating “serious problems” for Ilham Aliyev in Azerbaijan.

Russia has a complex Muslim landscape. Mostly Sunni. Iran is Shiite.

The black cloud of Obama across the world is about to be undone.

Obama is not worthy to be a shine boy. Those guys work for a living.

Perhaps President Trumps message to clean up your own back yard and keep your nose out of mine is taking hold. Oh, pay your own bills as well. US energy policy is about to rearrange the political landscape as well.

Russia will soon be merely a Renfrew to China’s Dracula. Just as Obama’s bosses planned.

Azerbaijan is Shia, however. But I doubt if they will have any uprising, regardless.

Furthermore, an Iran ruled by the Mullahs is not an open threat to Russia. Iranian focus is in M.E. where they team with Russia to support Assad.

Putin can employ the Iranians as surrogates to foment problems in the middle east that can’t be traced back directly to Russia. The Mullahs may not be a fully compliant client state, but they are a lot more useful to the Russians than a potential ally to India, China, or players in the West.

The Russians remember that the last secular government in Iran was a thorn on their southern border since the Shah was an active friend of the West.

Re Trump has opened a few cans of worms in the world.

Yes, DUNE-sized worms, MOABs of the sands, the underminers of Islamic extremists, and enemies of the Democrats.

Have anyone been to Tatarstan ever? It is certainly much less Islamic than London or Paris.
I also fail to understand that makes a connection between Iranian protests against corruption and Sharia and ‘separation of borderlands’ inside Russia. Regarding Russia and ethnic Muslim republics fhe fed government is actually an anti-Sharia force by itself which begs for an opposite conclusion using author’s own logic. And when it comes to corruption you can imagine Dagestan has it hundred times worse than European Russia.

Garbage. Russian media started to report it earlier than most Western MSM and certainly did it more extensively. It took MSM days to catch up.

” “” “” “Russia has a complex Muslim landscape. Mostly Sunni. Iran is Shiite.” “” “” “

Yep, Rose. The final reason why the article is a total drivel.

I don’t think outsiders realize what a fragile empire Putin has been trying to maintain in post-Soviet Russia all these years...the threat of separatism (on the part of Tatarstan, Chechnya, et al.) - is of constant concern and worry.

Hence why Putin buddy Ramazan Kadyrov (recently sanctioned by Trump admin and booted off social media) is funded heavily to stay happy.

In Tatarstan, there is growing tension over language policies. Kremlin line is Russian-only. Tatar people not happy.

Tatarstan is a loyal part of Russia for nearly 500 years. The language non-issue would fix it in no time /s

Missionary friends of mine tell me that the single biggest factor in turning mulsims away from islam is sharia law.

The average person HATES it and does not like living under the rule that has gripped most of the muslim countries.

There's no drumbeat for intervention -- that's probably what is indicated. Nothing gets brodacast without regime approval.
