A Pennsylvania woman said she recently opened a power bill showing she owed more to her local power provider than the gross domestic product of most of the world’s nations.

According to the Erie Times-News, Mary Horomanski, she was shocked to see an outstanding balance of more than $284 billion with a monthly payment of nearly $30,000 due immediately.

While she’s at work, her cats are busy using the electric can-opener.

I’m guessing she used “green” electricity rather than normal electricity. A common mistake.

Should not have signed up for the quarter billion dollar per kilowatt hour contract.

Seriously, it would have been interesting how this happened. Was the wrong price per kWh entered or was there a problem with how much energy was used? I think it has to be the first because most residential electric meters use 5 digits (99999 kWh maximum) and handle the rollover gracefully. At normal prices that would have been around two trillion kilowatt hours used.

customers out in Califonication with their notorious infamously corrupt state ‘regulators’ ... would NOT be surprised at all by such a large utility bill

Maybe to scare her into paying the $284.46 promptly and willingly.

That’s why you should ALWAYs allow the utility to suck the money directly out of your checking account, so you aren’t faced with this kind of sticker shock. The overdraft fees can be a bit steep when it goes over a Billion dollars, however.

She’s just lucky the electric company didn’t alert the police to the unusual electrical usage; they obtain a warrant for a pot farm; smash down her door; kill her; and then shoot the dog for good measure.

For which they will be deemed to have acted appropriately under the circumstances.

I am glad it was posted. I didn’t see it before and now get to read it. The comments on this post are funny... one of the reasons I love FR... and I would have missed them, too.

Thank you for posting.

Screw that, I would write a check for the full amount just to see it all explode. I want the bill and the check returned for insufficient funds. Best 30-50 dollars spent.

She should mail them a check for the amount and hope they refund a large part of it before they try to cash her check,

I had a utility billing clerk working for me and one day I heard her talking to a man at the counter about his water bill. It was $3+ million and he was asking for some one to re-read the meter and she was saying the billing was correct. I quickly stepped in and told him I would get his meter re-read and not to worry about that bill.

After he left I asked if our billing software had High/low history flags so that we can be alerted for unusually high or low bills. She said yes but they had never been told by the Finance Director to activate them. These flags help the meter crews by alerting them to possible meter failures so they can be inspected or repaired if needed, or if they just need to go re-read the meter again.
