Just saw 'DARKEST HOUR". Go see it!

Posted on 12/24/2017 5:49:44 AM PST by DIRTYSECRET

Unlike "Dunkirk" it was ALL acting. Coming off the Trump victory the timing of it's release is interesting. Too many not-so-subtile similarities. He's gruff, his own party abandons him, his family keeps him going and he has to deal with a bunch of wusses who are too cowardly to see what's going on. He's alone and he get's his inspiration from the common people he meets on the subway. Theater was pretty much filled-matinee. Upon leaving I observed that most everyone was older.

BTW FDR was useless. Chamberlain still thought they could negotiate for peace.

Excellent. Oldman joins Day-Lewis, Bale in his ability to become another human.

Thanks, planning to see it!

I adore Gary Oldman but I have a hard time imagining him as Churchill. How did he do?

Why bothet? Today’s Britons are not worthy of Sir Winston. They fought like hell to ‘repel the Hun,’ only to willingly permit the invasion of the Muslim savages who will be their undoing as a nation and a people.

FDR was pretty much just a socialist political hack but the Greatest and Silent Generations idolized him. Most believe he saved them from the Great Depression when most historians have concluded that he prolonged it.

He did have the sense to get some good people on the Military side of the War though and let them run with it. Leahy and Marshall were two of the people he counted on. He did a lot of great things as a wartime leader because there was no other choice but at least he made a lot of right choices.

Never knew how Churchill really was. I do remember the historical line “I’d drink it” referring to a supposed wife who would poison his coffee. There were plenty of funny moments so he musta been a character.

There's talk about him being a contender for an Oscar.

Let’s hope the nation does not reject Trump after he has pulled us back from the abyss that Barky had us in.

Churchill saved his nation and probably the world from the Axis and was rejected after that by the very nation he saved. Never did understand that. Never.

Read FDR’s executive orders for 12/8/41-1/7/42 and you will see a man totally in command.

Winston Churchill commented on the 'dreadful curses of Mohammedanism' in his 1899 book 'The River Wars.'

I wish Oldman mentioned that in the movie.

I’m also reading ‘American Caesar’, a novel about MacArthur. More similarities as well as flaws. In his MAGA campaign I’m sure Trump has every intention of joining this group. It will take all of his 8 years and he won’t be around long enough afterwards to bask in his glory or rest on his laurels-unlike Obama and BJ. They left the WH at a relatively young age and any thought of greatness is missing. At least Carter did humble carpentry work.

You are 100% correct!

Winston Churchill 1899: “Individual Muslims may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world.”

Give it month... It will be available for free on the internet. I assumed Dunkirk was going to be good... It was terrible, but you can’t go wrong with Churchill.

The man went from the disaster of Gallipoli directly to trenches of Europe in WW1 to atone... Then he became the 20th century’s greatest political hero recognizing German National Socialism for the evil it was well before others did, and he proceeded to rally the British the free world to destroy it after the darkest hour came.

The greatest leader of the 20th century. PERIOD! (Reagan and Pope John Paul II come in tied for second place in my books when they jointly defeated communism.)

We saw it Friday. There were a few WWII vets in the audience and they didn’t seem to have any criticisms of the movie. So nice to see a movie without special effects and grandiose background music. You had to pay attention, though, the dialogue went fast. I highly recommend it.

“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the faith: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.”

There was a book written post WWII named “The Road Ahead”, I believe. It was in my late Dad’s college books and warned about the forthcoming invasion of Socialism in the US.

It discussed how Socialism took over Britain after World War I and had immaculated it. It warned about socialists in the US, naming a Congressman, Hubert Humphrey as one of them.

After the Germans were defeated, the Brits turned out Churchill in favor of socialists promising free stuff.

Churchill was rejected after the war was done. Didn’t need him anymore. He musta been hated every step of the way but reluctantly accepted. On a smaller level it’s the same with Bush 41 after Kuwait. The people will never recognize the skill with witch he conducted the war and the diplomacy leading up to it. Same with managing Soviet nukes after the Berlin wall fell. They didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Remember the protests that came with Pershing missiles under Reagan? Turned out he did the right thing. A wartime leader may just be unnecessary in peacetime. The moral: No good deed goes unpunished.
