Cross Survives Fire While Surrounding Area Burns – Update On California Fires.
IWB ^ | Ruby Henley

A cross at Ventura Park is still standing after the Thomas Fire devoured all around it.  Many in California see this as a sign of hope while all else around them is lost.  There was little time to gather belongings and flee.  Firefighters died as they fought to save homes, as innocent horses perished in fires that defied anything we have ever seen.

The Serra Cross had stood since World War II, but rumors of the cross burning down had broken on social media. As power lines and everything else around the cross were destroyed, many reported the cross was gone, too.  Yet the cross did survive the fire, and even the Weather Channel recorded this miracle.

The original cross was placed on the hill in 1782. Over the years, the original cross and replacements were lost; however, the present cross has stood atop the hill since 1941.

The trees around it are also still standing, as are the branches and trunks of the bushes, all charged but standing.

Once you hike up the hill to where the Serra Cross is the view is magnificent. You are looking over the town of Ventura and all the way to Catalina on a clear day.
My teen granddaughter and I do it a couple of times a year just for the view.

Some of those horses might not have been so innocent.
And who is this "we" that Ruby refers to?

Is she toting around that Gerbil again?

”innocent horses perished in fires...”

Non-rational animals are neither innocent or guilty. They are morally neutral. Unless one believes the world is one big Disney animated film.

if it’s made of wood or plastic, I’d say that’s amazing. if it’s metal, concrete or stone, I don’t see it so special since they withstand fire much better.

It’s wood on a stone pedestal.

For insurance reason—the owner of the boarding stable kept them lock in there stalls to burn to death when he pulled out. He should have let them run for there lives (as other did). I don’t know all the details but it looks bad. The racehorses in fire danger—500 horses—were released. 12 died in the fire but the rest ran to freedom and were gathered and saved.

The Thomas fire still has about 10 separate burn zones, with each being like a separate fire. The cross is near the lower left of the dark green (first day of the fire). Over 10,000 acres burned yesterday (darkest red on the map).

Yes, the cross is wood.

It’s been five years since I moved from Ventura, but it was a shock to see the fire line on the map. One map showed a danger line right over the back fence of my old house. It’s tough to think the nice neighborhood I lived in for 11 years is probably gone.
