Only 15% of hiring managers would consider hiring an overweight woman

Radio personality Shavonne Patrice Owens, 37, says she experienced weight discrimination firsthand when she applied for a daycare job in Huntsville, Alabama, two years ago. Despite having all the qualifications for the job, Owens says her friend — a former employee of the daycare center in question (whose employment later terminated) — told her the reason she was ultimately passed over for the job was because of her weight.

Owens, who was 525 pounds at 5’11” at the time of her interview with the daycare center, said that this incident “hurt for a second, just for a second… but I know who I am and because of my weight, it has restricted me from a lot of things.” Looking back, she said she’s lost out on other career opportunities (such as jobs in retail that would have required prolonged periods of standing), and she suspects her size was working against her.

What’s more,“the standards for physical appearance are stricter for women than men. Women are more likely to be evaluated on their physical appearance,” says Dr. Kelly Brownell, the dean of the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. This, he explains, makes it even harder for overweight or obese women to contend with recruiters’ prejudicial biases against them.

I don’t think a 525 lb dude would be hired either. Think of the extra health care costs and risks associated with this level of weight.

525 pounds? Would you like to give her CPR? AND risk the civil liability if she got hurt on the job? And provide a safe work environment? You’d have to hire a mahout!

” Females who have had children and careers, are chunky overweight or just big, are usually very good managers. Skinny females who have never had children re horrible managers but insist on explaining their greatness every fay.”

exact opposite of where i worked: the fat female managers were surly, stupid and mean, and the best supervisor i ever had was a slender, childless woman who was smart, funny, likable, a hard worker, and brilliant at managing people ...

“Actually, we recently found that if I both ignore the government food recommendations (ie eat a high fat diet, avoid many vegetables) and cut back, I seem to lose weight.”

no question about it. high-fat, low carb is pretty much the only diet that actually works for losing weight. fat satiates and kills the appetite, while carbs induce a roller-coaster of rising and falling blood sugar that keep the appetite rolling as well.

It sounds like it was her legs that were working against her.

There is no way she would be able to keep up with energetic children at a day care throughout the whole day.

I knew a master electrician who was like 5'11, and weighed no more than 125 pounds. She was firecracker energy from sunrise to sunset. She was a very good electrician. Impressive trades worker.

That said, she could not get along with others. She went right to eff you with the first deviation from how she wanted things to be. She had to go. She needed to own her own shop.

Due to living in Michigan, much of the year is very unappealing as it relates to outdoor exercise. I resorted to getting a treadmill, put it in front of the TV as a constant reminder - you can watch and sit or watch and walk. It’s been two years and I still use it regularly.

So this one time I'm on an elevator at work. It's packed with people, including this HUGE fat woman. She drops something she was holding. I look at her and go, "Now what're uyou gonna do?"

I'm such an ass.

“They used to say don’t eat butter, eat margarine. Now it turns out that margarine is worse, and butter not that bad after all. When can you trust the health experts when they don’t seem to know themselves?”

you can’t. the establishement so-called healthy diet experts are charlatans pushing fake nutrition.

like pretty much everything else where there are varying opinions, you need to ignore the views propagated by the fake stream media and research the issues for yourself.

in the case of diet, the establishment “experts” are fundamentally wrong, touting nutritional advice that’s the opposite of what’s actually good for you.

I know Isound like a gender basher or some such-but except for the women here at FR and my two female friends who are neighbors, most females are treacherous creatures who quit wanting to be a man’s equal when they think it is more profitable to play the poor-little-victim card instead-so they go for it.

It has been my experience in case management that obese women with work related injuries will almost always start begging you right away to see that they get a motorized scooter “just till I’m totally mobile again”-which, of course means “I intend to ambulate on that thing for the rest of my life”. The owner of the comp consulting firm I worked for showed us how to make the fat scooter seekers jump through so many hoops with so much paperwork that they’d give up after a month or so, take our advice and offer for a membership to Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig instead-way cheaper and healthier than the scooter...

“There were three types of people/profiles to never hire.”

inquiring minds want to know what the other two types were?

btw, looks to me like if not already included, i’d add “Muslim” as a fourth due to all the special accommodations that they need as well as lawsuits when same is not provided ...

“When it first came out, the dairy industry wouldn’t let the whitish color of margarine be changed to look like butter so yellowing was stirred into it by the cook at home.”

yep. my dad says when he was a boy during WWII, they often just slathered the white stuff on bread without going to all of that extra effort to stir in the food coloring. Fundamentally, margarine is just Crisco with artificial color and flavors - in other words: poison.

Later in life, my parents both died of premature heart disease and diabetes because they switched from butter to margarine because they believed the fake stream media’s fake nutrition advice.

I went the opposite way. Accustomed to lighting after even so much as a glass of water, lingering over a meal made me want to smoke so much, I had to leave the table the moment I finished eating. The smoking was stopped and the lingering never reinstated.

I worked with a guy who as 5’9” and 320 lbs. We started going to the gym and walking 30 minutes each day right after work. He lost 30 lbs in the first 45 days without changing any other habit in his life.

We started adding weights and eventually he started jogging again. By the time we parted ways, he was down to 250 lbs and looked great (his weight as a linebacker in college).

Heck, with smartphones, you don’t even need a tv set nearby. There’s a guy with a podcast whom I listen to when I’m on the treadmill. He’s so humorous and conversational (a libertarian in Guatemala who discusses life in Latin America while endlessly plugging his seminars) that my hour is up before I realize how much work I’ve put in.

I’ve done some tough jobs where I was down to the last hole on my 36” belt. Any regular exercise will do that.

I work mostly for my best compadre-a contractor I’ve known 15 years-I manage projects, do any physical labor that a strong female my size can do, and make sure safety protocols such as proper body mechanics are followed-my transferable skills and all that-my own sub-part of the job is the ceramic tile installation and hand application of texture and various faux finishes, which I learned to do at 14, working for my uncle on jobs in the summer.

I don’t get along with other women-especially in a work environment-mostly because I don’t relate to them at all-my mindset is more in line with a guy’s-and I look at men as equals-my way is not the only one and I do not have to be the queen bee around them-it is just the opposite with women.
