No, the article pointed out that it takes the same number of seconds for the same line to move through the light, whether the cars are more closely parked or further away. I’d get a little closer than 25 feet, but I still leave enough space (partly in case I need to exit the line for some reason).

And if somebody wants to get in there, let them. Or I guess you’ve never been trapped in the wrong lane? I figure what goes around comes around, and if you let people in, give enough space, etc. It all comes out the same in the end. And there’s less chance of an accident really ruining your day.

They are also assuming that everyone starts moving as soon as the light turns green, which they won’t.

It’s no different with people who will string out in long lines once they start moving. In the military you are taught to march because that is the most efficient way to move large numbers of people.

Here in Georgia, there are a lot of six lane roads on major thoroughfares. This makes for complex advance green arrows, advance yellow arrows, flashing yellow arrows. In many cases during rush hour, the cars are backed up light to light, and sometimes for more than one cycle of changes. If the drivers are all courteous and leave that kind of room, the backups may still spill all the way back into the school zone, as the cars that are a light back may wind up being stuck for another as they may have the red light at the time that they would have been going on the green at the next intersection.
