He forages in rubbish to put half-eaten food and still-usable items to good use. In the process, Daniel Tay has found a happier way to live - and is inspiring others to do likewise.

SINGAPORE: He spots an open cake amid the used cans, old clothes and other rubbish. “There are three rules when it comes to eating food from a dump,” explains Mr Daniel Tay, 38, as he puts them into action.

First, he examines the cake for mould, then sniffs it and finally licks it. This time, however, he does not take a nibble as he usually does when testing whether such scraps are safe to eat.

Something else catches his eye. “Ben and Jerry’s!” he exclaims, before fishing out a pint of half-eaten ice cream. “It’s still cold. It has ice crystals on it."

He adds triumphantly: “Some people from our community said that I’d never be able to find ice cream!”

He is referring to the dumpster-diving community who forage for food and other items. That night, cake and ice cream are not all that he finds: He also rescues untouched mango pudding in cups.

On another occasion, while out scavenging with a group of 16, he digs through bags of trash to get to half-eaten chicken wings. “They’re in a box, they should be fine,” Mr Tay says nonchalantly about eating the drumsticks....

Thirty ago, I remember reading of a man and his grown daughter living in the USA, on less than one thousand dollars a year because all their food came from dumpster diving.

I’m not that hungry-yet. Then I would rather eat dog and fight over the bones.

I knew a guy like that. He lived in a shack he built. The property owner let him stay because he ran all the real vagrants off. Living his life his way and not standing on a street corner with a cardboard sign.

I have no problem with that or this dumpster diver.

It is amazing what rich people throw out.

When I lived in Manhattan, I found a brand new LL Bean winter jacket, still in the box, in the trash vestibule on my floor. It was my size, too.

As kids, we lived near a Dunkin Donuts that would throw out the unsold donuts every night. They put them in a paper flour sack and put that in the dumpster behind the shop.

Being typical teen boys, after discovering this treasure, we maybe ate one or two as a trial, but wind up mostly using them as a source of ammunition to throw at friends and classmates. After a couple weeks of this, they, or the police, figured it out, and a lock was put on the dumpster.

When I was a kid the local bakery would sell donuts to us afeter the store closed at the back door at half price.

So my parents would give my brother and I money to get donuts once in a while on a Friday night in the summer so we could have donuts the next morning
