General John Kelly told the president that calling Gold Star widows might not be a good idea.
It was probably because it was at a time when emotions were tender. It's also clear because as in most things today, there's an opportunity to have things politicized by those ready, willing, and able to exploit such calls for political purposes.

Yep, he should record everything he does just like the cops do with the body cams, otherwise the left just like they treat the cops will LIE and the fake news media will print it as fact. The only way to fight the left is to crush them relentlessly with facts, yes even then they will not admit they are wrong, but at least it shuts them the hell up. Can you imagine if Trump had a recording of that phone call and released it? It would have absolutely obliterated the credibility of the rodeo clown and it would make other members of the treason party think twice about doing it again.
No, he should call every one because it is the right thing to do. He should also record the calls but never release the audio, because just knowing they can’t lie and get away with it will stop the Rodeo Clown type shenanigans.
NO. This is a great thing for him, or any President, to do. He needs to polish the message and the delivery, but he should continue making these calls.
Johnson’s widow is either telling the truth, or lying in exchange for a newly fattened bank account.

Agree. He should never release audio to the public, because it is none of our business and disrespectful. But he could tell any of the Rodeo Clown type in future that he has recordings and they will be played in the presence of an officer of the court who will later be deposed under oath to testify to the veracity of what the President said. Being accountable and at risk of possible liability would put an end to this crap immediately without violating the confidentiality of what is said on the call.
They seem to be the ones who have hissy fits.
The rest of the nation appreciates it the same way they appreciate the condolence letter.
Next question Bob?
Maybe he should have Bush paint pictures. Better than having Bush give speeches although Bush’s paintings are not very good.
Good answer. I wish you were on a Trump advisory board.
As the father of an active duty USAF pilot in harm’s way, I can say for my part a letter would be plenty. I am more concerned that the life given be not given in vain.
Trump should do what he feels in this regard.
And the swamp dwellers, media whores, media frauds, and other malcontented communists can go take a flying fuq at a rolling donut.
Wives and mothers of our patriotic military heroes are not themselves necessarily heroic or patriotic. In fact, many do not have the first bit of understanding of what would motivate a young man to risk his life in service of our country.
No matter if he does or doesn’t, he will be viciously attacked by the MSM and lunatic democrats/liberals. It’s a no win situation. Liberalism is a contagious mental disease.
My sentiments exactly.
Have the families of the other three spoken up?
Stick to a personal letter to the family of the service man or woman, if he really wants to do something memorable.
Do you think Trump came out looking bad here? I don't for a minute! It's the Left that's looking unhinged.
I think he came out looking fine. If you look at my posts this morning, you’ll see I’m arguing about this with someone who appears to be a Never Trumper. All I’m saying on this thread is that if people are going to lie and politicize everything the president does, he should cut his losses (wins, in this case) and send a letter. He doesn’t need the aggravation.
Several years ago I lost a family member to a very tragic incident. The family member hadn’t even been located when a Congressional Senator called to express condolences. Despite the fact that the call didn’t change anything, nor did it comfort at that time, we were still surprised and grateful that time was taken and acknowlegement made regarding our loss. I think it meant more later than it did at that moment.
On the other hand, my grandfather served in two world wars. After his death at a ripe old age, we received a letter from President Reagan acknowledging and thanking for his excellent service. I have that letter as part of our family history collection.
It would have meant much more if it wasn’t a form letter, and if it had been sent to him on his 80th birthday or some special day, so he could have seen it.
Now, there are two approaches. A phone call and a letter. Both have meaning and both are good for different reasons. The paper remains tangible through the years while a recorded call could end up obsolete due to technological changes rendering it unusable.
Either is honorable and is a memory to cherish.
Btw, granddad was a Democrat who didn’t like Reagan, but he still would have been honored that the President of the United States took a moment of his very busy schedule to notice. He respected the office.
Yes, nothing to gain, plenty to lose. Some of the families will record the conversations, and then release the tapes whenever Trump mis-speaks or mis-pronounces a name or something, which is natural and should be expected from time to time.
And by personally calling every family, he is setting a standard he could not possibly maintain in the event of a wider conflict with more casualties. At which point they will roast him for not calling everybody on a timely basis.
Why not just go back to the standards created by democrap heroes, FDR, Johnson, and Wilson? Just send a form a letter... and if anyone complains he could say “Hey I used to call personally but the libs had to make it political so I stopped doing that. Libs ruin everything.”
No. Not his fault that an America-hating insane person used his call to trash him.
