Weeks after Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, the island remains in crisis. Eighty three percent of people in Puerto Rico dont have power and thirty five percent dont have access to clean water. The death toll currently stands at 48 but is likely to keep rising in the coming weeks.
Washington has responded to this crisis with billions in immediate disaster assistance, helping the cash-strapped island afford its basic expenses after tax revenue has all but dried up. This financial commitment isnt going to end anytime soon: Experts suggest the final cost could exceed $100 billion.

Fix it up, then cut them loose.
Hundred billion... Isn’t that what we’re spending each year anyway on benefits to PR’s population?
Hell no, just 2 more Rat senators for the left.
The real reason...Dems are slipping badly everywhere. They’ve tapped out the pool of fraudulent votes. This would tip the balance of the Senate to the Dems.
Let’s say if PR is as red as (any top red state in the mainland), Dems’ enthusiasm about helping them will be very much diminished.
Yes, I am that jaded.
Dear Cesar & Alberto: it isn’t up to DC. And we don’t want you.
That’s my vote—independence for them. Let them choose their citizenship, but don’t let them have both.
Not only NO, but HELL NO!!
Lib's like welfare?
Give PR back to the hispanics of Spain.
Bump!
Agree, cut them loose.
Cut them loose.
The only reason to add another state is if it brings something of value to the rest of the union. PR does not. Furthermore, the people of PR have show consistently that they don’t want to be a state.
Cut them loose.
Only one reason for this. Alk else is BS. Two more RAT Senators. That is all this is about.
There’s a process for admitting states to the union. I don’t know all the steps. One such step would be for Congress to pass a bill admitting states. As I recall from the admittance of Alaska and Hawaii, those places had to vote in referendums, and write a state constitution, and some other things had to happen, before statehood was considered in Washington by the Congress.
Has any of this happened in Puerto Rico? I know they have had referendums but didn’t think there was ever any overwhelming vote for statehood.
Why would they want to join us?
We’re a racist, sexist, homophobic, hatefilled nation of backwoods white rednecks.
Much, much better if PR goes alone.
That seems to have changed, from what I read:
The fifth referendum was held on June 11, 2017. 97% percent voted for statehood. The 23% voter turnout is as valid as others during their admission process: Wisconsins statehood plebiscite had a 17% turnout, Arizona 7%, Hawaii 35%, and Alaska had a 21% turnout.
I do not want them as a state.I dont want to bail them out. They bring us no benefit. Just give them independence and leave us alone. We are totally broke.
