this is why you should own a pair of snake boots in Texas
Rattlesnakes are no joke, especially when they grow to this size. This hunter was just a few inches away from having a really bad day when he spotted this incredible snake around Zapata, Texas.
Luckily, he spotted what lay ahead right before things were about to go down. The rattlesnake never even rattled, but he happened to spot it when he was a step away. And good thing he did, because it looks like it could have done some damage.
At almost 6 foot an 7 inches, the giant rattlesnake had 20 buttons on its rattler. A sure sign that this was no young pup of a snake. Safe to say this hunter wished he would have used those 20 buttons to give him some what of a warning that he was near. See this huge rattlesnake video here.

This western diamondback is close to the size of the larger eastern subspecie. Humongous.

“Zapata” means shoe in Mexican.
I thought that was ironic, or something.

I assume he blew the snake’s head off with the pistol in the picture. Good shot.

We live in Balcones wildlife preserve N.W. of Austin. We have tons of rattlers, deer, foxes, coyote, boars, etc. Also centipedes with nasty stingers on their feet. Have killed several scorpions IN our house.

Used to hunt them with a 12 gauge when I was younger, more agile and a lot more stupid.

Wow! And, what kind of cat is that in the picture? Is that a cougar or a big bob cat or what?

The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum in downtown San Antonio used to have one that was preserved. It was that big or bigger.
To: w1n1
Yep, that’s a big one. But the most dangerous rattlesnake is a young one that hasn’t yet learned how to control it’s venom.

Don't assume that big rattlers only live in central and west Texas. In east Texas, we have the chevron rattler, and I've seen plenty of them on my place easily over 6 feet.
To: Vaquero
It is true that the big rattlesnakes can strike well above the height of most “snake boots.” Not so with cottonmouths, copperheads, etc. The good news is that really big rattlesnakes are quite rare.
To: al_c
Rhat is so true. With them, you get the full monty. Adults often dry-strike as a warning. They just don’t want to get stepped on.

Hope he didn’t waste the meat.
