More news is coming out this morning on Stephen Paddocks, and it is not as cut and dried as I thought. This is a very complex case, and it seems everyone is reporting different aspects of the worst mass shooting in the history of the United States.
Paddocks did not act alone. FBI reports there are many significant leads around the world with many flights taken by more than one person all over the world. Possibly, and this is just my opinion, many of Paddocks gambling trips could have been a cover for arms deals and terrorist connections. Was he gunrunner who sold guns to jihadists? The attack could have been worse. Paddocks targeted aviation tanks with the intention of blowing them up causing a massive fuel blast. http://content.jwplatform.com/previews/MyWNxdjC-np6v9i2TLas Vegas Strip mass murderer Stephen Paddock used his Mandalay Bay hotel room to fire bullets at jet fuel tanks Sunday night, a knowledgeable source told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The bullets left two holes in one of two circular white tanks. One of the bullets penetrated the tank, but did not cause a fire or explosion near the Route 91 Harvest country music festival, another knowledgeable source said late Wednesday. The tanks are roughly 1,100 feet from the concert site, where Paddock killed 58 people and wounded almost 500. Several airplane hangars belonging to prominent corporations are also near the tanks.

This is either fake news, or indicates that the perp was a moron. If it was that easy to detonate aviation fuel tanks, there wouldn’t be any of them left standing today around the country. You surely would have had them destroyed in a few “Hold muh beer and watch this!” types of incidents by now.
I think that is it, personally. He was just spraying bullets and had no ability to aim.
Also, I’ve seen the photo of him dead. Looks like he put the gun in his mouth. There is no obvious entry wound as if someone else shot him.
Jet Fuel vapor is quite explosive.
If those tanks were only 1/2 full, or less, the remainder being air...and a powerful round hits the “empty” part of the tank, there would be a big bang.
A very big bang.
Ever hear of a Fuel-Air explosive?
No, jet fuel is not gasoline, and I'm not aware of a bullet even incendiary causing an explosion for JP4, JP5 ect. Now if it was 100 octane gasoline it would be a different matter. Either way I think it would have had to leak a while and burn to get enough pressure to blow it up and those bullets would leak slowly.
Again, a .223 at 1000 yds isn't going to do it, and most likely neither would a .308, and only two shots at that. I'm thinking those two shots were probably fliers.
This guy had the means, why not use a Barrett .50cal ?
No, it’s not. Paddock might have had a chance if he had been able to put his stash of Tannerite at the base of the tanks and even then a hundred pounds would have been preferable to fifty pounds.
Theyve been digging for over a year on the Trump-Russia connection, but still think there is something there.
Our FBI is full of dumbsh!ts.
Where was his car parked? Was it within sight line of the windows? That would be an elaborate plan....
He was shooting 1000yds, those guns couldn’t penetrate, and I don’t think he had that in mind. If he had a .50cal you’d know he meant to penetrate.
Me too, probably fliers.
Ok, so is this a "helter skelter" strategy?
Agree. Could just be the bump stocks kicking upwards.
I don’t think much oxygen is occupying the empty part of the tank. Typically you’d need an incendiary to light them up.
Not from that distance and a .308 at best?
Put one gallon of diesel or jet fuel into a 5 gallon gerry can. Put it outside in the desert, in the sun.
Then shoot it.
From a distance.
Be ready to be very, very surprised.
Don’t ya suppose the designers of those tanks take this into consideration?
Closer to kerosene than gasoline, IIUC.
His attack on the fuel tanks was poorly prepared in many ways.
Yep, hard to believe that they told us that static electricity caused flight 800 to blow up.
Thanks for pointing that out, though most here probably don’t understand why.
Gasoline, and AV-Gas for reciprocating engine aircraft has a lower ignition temperature and is more likely to ignite by a spark. Jet fuel, for turbine and jet engines, is designed to have a higher flash point temperature and, as you stated, is harder to ignite.
I have not heard anyone state whether the storage tanks Paddock shot were AV-Gas or Jet fuel. It would seem a not well thought out part of his plan if the tanks turn out to be jet fuel, which they probably are.
Then he should’ve done his research. Those tanks are designed for a .30-06 shot at 100yds. He wasn’t even close.
