Last week, three-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton asked people to try to educate themselves on why athletes are kneeling for the American national anthem in protest of police brutality and oppression of people of color. Not long after, he said he may join them at the U.S. Grand Prix this month.
The act of kneeling for the anthem started with NFL player Colin Kaepernick in 2016, and has since spread. Even in sports that have yet to see kneeling in their arenas, such as NASCAR, everybody has an opinion: Team owners Richard Petty and Richard Childress said theyd fire anyone who didnt stand for the anthem, while driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. said Americans have the right to peaceful protest.
(President Donald Trump followed the NASCAR team-owner rhetoric, saying NFL owners should fire son of a bitch anthem protestors.)
Hamilton, whos from the U.K. and races in a series that only visits the U.S. once a year currently, has followed and talked openly about U.S.-centric racial and political debates of late. Hes commented extensively on the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as the election and actions of Trump.
Hes used Instagram to say a lot of it.

And although hes not sure how hell approach the USGP, Hamilton told the Sunday Times hes considering taking a knee when the U.S. anthem plays. From the Times:
Ive not even thought about that race, but of course I will have to start to think about it what would be right for me to do, or do I even need to get involved?
Its not my national anthem, but the issue that is in the States well, its not just in the States, it is a global thing. Its more focused and probably at its worse perhaps in America. I think we all do need to stand together.
Hamilton continued, via the local Austin American-Statesman:
Its important for everyone to stand up for what they believe in, the Mercedes driver said. I dont plan on being more political, but I do feel we should all stand up and stick by what we believe in.
Hamilton, who leads the F1 standings this year, has been hammering away at Trump for quite a while in a series of politically-charged tweets and Instagram posts, including a now-deleted video which involved a doll of President Trump.
It is open for anyone to have freedom of speech, and I guess we can all play a role in trying to make a difference in the world, Hamilton said prior to the Malaysia GP. Particularly if your leader is not helping in that area.
In response to Hamiltons Instagram posts, Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff told Motorsport.com that his driver may need to rethink his approach to such controversial matters:
This is a very controversial and polarising story, [Wolff] said. I wouldnt want to get involved in politics. We all have our opinion.
Lewiss feelings about human rights are very strong and I think he wanted to show that and probably Instagram as the communication channel is something that he needs to rethink but I can relate to his feelings.
Hamilton, on the other hand, can relate to the athletes being talked down upon by the U.S. president. He identif[ies] with a lot of those individuals, as quoted by the Austin American-Statesman.
Well see if he kneels with them in a few weeks, too.
how many ‘acts of police brutality’, LEGIT ones where the perp that was killed or hurt didn’t FIRST try to MURDER or harm a police officer! Can this driver name off the top of his head?
Well who can blame him...he’s so oppressed!
/s
Now he’s shown himself to be just another idiot out of the race car.
America haters hate America. End of re-education attempt.
Now, the stinking lefties are going to ruin motorsport.
Lewis Hamilton should try to educate himself on basic manners.
Lewis, who?
He made 46 million last year alone. He is clearly oppressed....
7,500 blacks are killed by blacks each year (avg.). 250 are killed by cops. Where is the problem?
& this idiot is not even from here!!
It actually didn’t start with the Kapass kneeling.
It started with him sitting on his overpaid, over-privileged ass.
“I guess we can all play a role in trying to make a difference in the world”
These pathetically small minded assholes. Thinking a moment on the knee is going to change the world. It’s changing it alright, but not the way they expected. It’s hardening people all across the land who are fed up with the incessant whining and claims of “injustice” from certain classes of people.
I’d be impressed if he gave $45.9 million to charity.
I follow the shootings pretty closely and there are only a few that I can think of that were “acts” of brutality or bad shoots..
The Fruitvale Shooting, which intent to murder could not be proven, but poor weapon control.
A reserve deputy in Oklahoma did pretty much the same thing about two years ago.
The Chicago PD shooting of Laquan McDonald was FUBAR, even though he had a knife and was walking away from police.
The South Carolina shooting was ugly but they still could not convict.
The New York shooting where the Asian officer just fired into the dark was poor weapons control and panic.
But this is five in the last three years I can think of that I personally had issue with.
ALL ENEMIES, FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC. ALL ENEMIES.
I have two question, Who? and What?
I wouldn’t hold your breath...
Limey go home.
Average people are weary of EVERYTHING being politicized. The left offers no refuge from a constant barrage of political indoctrination.
Lewis has not matured beyond adolescence.
