Actually, a lot of volcanologists are amazed that Popocatepetl has not experienced a massive eruption by now, despite a lot of smaller eruptions over the years. A larger eruption—say spewing about just over cubic mile of ash into the atmosphere—could actually affect Earth’s climate for a year or more, which could result in California getting a lot more cold winter storms (up goes the snow pack this winter!).
