I make no apologies for our nation's high incarceration rate. Anybody dumb enough to end up in prison deserves it. The problem is the $30-60k costs per inmate and the resulting Prison Industrial Complex. Probably around $100 billion/yr. Devil's Island was too expensive for France to maintain. Where do we send them? Start with jailed immigrants. Use 3rd world labor rates to cut down costs. American prisoners can 'volunteer' to work in Siberia, developing places to allow Russia to prepare for war with China. No slave labor here. Some may even choose to stay once their sentences are up. In Russia's case Siberian development can only happen with Chinese labor, a Trojan horse in the making. Trump is a dealmaker, an unconventional(and successful) one. Where am I out of it on this issue?
The US has a incarceration rate similar to Stalin’s Soviet Union at the height of the Gulag.
1/2 of our prisioners are locked up for non-crimes.
Just seal off California and we’ll be in much better shape.
Are you saying we have political prisoners? What exactly are you saying about non crimes?
How about the death penalty for capital crimes?
Much of the problem goes away right there.
You said “penal”. He he he....
Sounds good. We can start off by Walling off Manhattan and making it a Maximum Security Prison.
Send them all to Afghanistan and give them 20 acres.
Clearly, we need a better system than the current incarceration program. The very best kind of program could be developed by religious institutions. Piercing to the heart of a life is fundamental to change. Religion is best able to accomplish this.
every illegal immigrant should be dropped off on the southern tip of south america.
See my FReeper profile for an alternative. Requires no infrastructure or guards, only transport and basic kit.
Non crimes? I disagree but there are groups such as the Sentencing Project that’s taking another look at discrimination and fairness issues. There’s the concept of Internal Exile where prisoners can be released to individual towns, report to the local sheriff, and go to work for churches. There are 50k towns in this country.
the average American commits 3 felonies/day. Victimless crimes abound. Pre-crimes abound. Thought crimes are increasing.
Americans are no more likely to be criminals than say the Dutch, yet we have 10 times the ( per capita ) convict rate.
Any freedom loving conservative should be concerned about leviathan.
Interesting notion. Rent ‘em out. Optional, of course, can’t go compelling people to hard labor, but can give them the choice between productive work that might actually earn some paltry income, vs stuck in a cage 23/7.
I still prefer the “tent city” approach, conditions akin to mundane living 400 years ago (tent, blanket, 2 changes clothes, soap, toothbrush, ambient-temperature water, hardtack & pemmican (I’d add modern Soylent)), and nowhere to go - learn why people got civilized ya brutes.
My concern with penal colonies is they turn into self-perpetuating cultures. Give them a reason to reform.
I assume you are talking about drugs as non-crimes. That’s a whole ‘nother thread.
Robert Heinlein...Coventry...
About a year-and-a-half ago I heard a rumor France was going to restart the penal colony facility on Devil’s Island.
It’s doubtful he’ll supply any specifics on his claim.
