Vintage Shotgun Pics and Old Ads
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 9/14/2017 | D Smith

Sit back and rest your eyes on these outstanding vintage shotgun advertisements. They’ll make you want to round up the dogs and hit the fields.

Here’s something fun and interesting to engage your daydreaming muscles for a few minutes, a nostalgia if you will. Check out these cool vintage shotgun photos interspersed with some old shotgun magazine advertisements from when you were a kid—or maybe even before that.

I just love looking at well-composed photos of old firearms and old gun ads like the kind found in vintage sporting magazines. Who doesn’t? A lot of us, no matter our age, eat up this old school stuff like candy.

Here’s an ad from 1972 for a Marlin Model 120 Magnum Pump Shotgun.

This is a double-barrel, 28-gauge hammer gun. Perfect for autumn bird hunting.

Although this Marlin Model 120 Pump Shotgun ad is from 1973, it references to an earlier time.

A Winchester 1897 transcends that badass look in this predominantly black photo. See the rest of the vintage shotgun pics and ads here

I found in our old family farmstead a collection of my great uncle’s hunting and shooting magazines. One from about 1960 featured a trip to the mountains of Iran with the Shah of Iran’s brother, basically would bring a tear to your eye. Thanks for sharing these. I wonder how I could share the aforementioned article here?

I like the old ones that even have a mailing form you send in a check and they mail you your weapon:

there was even one from 1950s for a ski-mounted 20 mm Lahti or something..!

I remember those Marlin shotgun ads. Sadly, nothing of the sort is offered any longer. That was once a thriving part of their business, especially the utilitarian “Goose Gun”.

A little catalog going back to the 50s carried the Lahti complete with skis. The cataLOG was called “YE OLD HUNTER”. the 20mm rounds were 2.50 each.

The Lahti features in John Ross' Unintended Consequences.

Years after he published that fantastic book the batf approached his ex-wife on the street offering her a way to get even with him.

I think they had just begun their divorce or something.

she was literally strolling down the sidewalk and it was a stranger who accosted her right there, and identified himself as a BATF agent.

all the details were posted here at Free Republic many years ago.

I don’t know what became of it but clearly the batf wanted to retaliate against Ross somehow for him having written that book.

I think she told him of the eery encounter and his lawyer sent a letter to the batf, probably a cease-and-desist letter.

From an archived FAQ page:
https://web.archive.org/web/20141204021131/http://john-ross.net/faq.php

Has anyone in the government given you any trouble about the book?

Sort of. Go to http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a39696d3b3c7b.htm for the letter my lawyer sent to the ATF concerning some efforts to intimidate my wife and also some book vendors. ATF’s official response was that they knew nothing about this, and that it must have been individuals acting on their own, without agency approval. This strikes me as a little far-fetched, that two agents would go out at 7:00 AM on their own time on an unapproved fishing expedition, but maybe that’s what happened.

No one has bothered me or my ex-wife since Jim Jeffries wrote the above letter.

Yeah. It must have been buried since 2011 when Ross wrote that. Perhaps Jim and the guys might be able to dig it up again? The search function didn’t work, either.

Here’s a link to a site specific Google search. It might be in there.

My Charles Daly (JP Sauer) 16 gauge side by side dating from about 1904, which I foolishly sold.
