Proof that Mass Immigration Has a Negative Impact on Americans
IWB ^ | Mark Angelides

The cap that President Trump has refused to lift on H-2B visas has forced companies all over the United States to do the unthinkable and hire American workers! What’s worse is that they are complaining that they have to pay American workers more…Tell me again; didn’t someone say that immigration was good for Americans?

Is this not irrefutable evidence that the low-skilled (or living in low-opportunity areas) workers are being squeezed out of the job market by workers who are willing to take a lower wage? Isn’t this known as wage-suppression? The fact that employers are hiring people as seasonal workers for lower wages does not reflect well on them. It ignores the most key fact: Without a proper wage, no one can build a stake in their future.

All I needed to hear was that Tim Cook from Apple was defending his 250 “Dreamers” that were working for Apple. That’s 250 jobs that American citizens who went to college for IT/STEM degrees aren’t working in, because Apple supposedly can’t find a qualified American citizen to fill the job. Horse Hockey!

Companies pay the least they have to pay to get the talent they need. Some companies think of the future and pay more to get higher quality employees. That tactic is less efficacious now with the functional requirement that characteristics other than merit must be included in hiring processes. And, companies have to survive until next year or their plans for ten years down the road are unproductive vanity. If they can't compete this year there is no next year.

Henry Ford classically paid higher wages than other car companies in order to get better talent. In Ford's day a company didn't have to carefully balance ethnic and sex ratios and thus reduce the talent level. And Ford got immediate advantage from the higher wages in that he was initiating a new more productive process and was getting the jump on all other car manufacturers. His relative costs were lowered in the short term as well as the long term.

Big established companies don't have the luxury of merit-only hiring or of paying higher wages because they are not starting something new that is radically more efficient than their competitors. In Ford's day a flood of cheap lablr would not have cancelled out the benefit of paying higher wages. Ford hired on talent only.

H2B is for jobs like housekeeping at seasonal places like Cape Cod, not tech jobs(H1). While it might be possible to hire people for those jobs (and it is a minimum wage job) I can attest that hiring seasonal help is difficult. For us, with the H2A program (agriculture) we pay $12.38/hour and hire pretty much every American that asks for a job. College kids leave us at the height of harvesting, and every one of our employees who stays suffer from the serious issue of being a loser. We feel like babysitters. Honestly, we could not function without our returning H2A workers. They work, they have families they are supporting back home, no drugs, no bs, truly part of our family.
Again, not sure about the real need for H2B, but I dont want to think about them throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Wait a minute!!!!! I thought DACA was about children. Since when does Apple hire children. This is all about cheap adult labor.

Also Ford’s assembly line required nearly everyone to show up every day. Unlike generalized assembly were if a quarter of the workers took a day off you just produced 25% less for the day, if you lost a small part of the assembly line you produced nothing. So Ford paid enough so that no one would risk his job through absenteeism.

How about paring down the welfare roles and stop paying Americans to not work. If this fails, grant non-citizens a six-month work visa. Cannot bring relatives. After six months must return home for six months before applying for another work visa. They don,t get roots and no children involved. A nation that does not protect its borders cannot sustain its sovergnity.

There have always been migrant farm workers, there should be a legal way to do that.

As to hospitality workers, if they reduce welfare there would be more than enough people to do the work as well as lawn care, nannys etc. we have a whole segment of people who make a great living doing nothing.

Whiney CEO’s, who annually rip off the system to the tune of multimillions in their salaries and bennies, should keep their mouths shut. They should not get a tax cut, since virtually all of them supported Hillary with endorsements and fat campaign checks. In fact, they should all get a hefty tax increase because they complained they didn’t pay enough taxes. EX: Warren Buffett.

They do not care about anyone but themselves, and that includes the well-being of the country. They should be thankful that the Middle Class is so docile after being kicked in the teeth and groin for so many years. In other times and places, the commoners used to send these oligarchs to the gallows.

I should have said thaat he paid for talent and reliability. i thought it as I pushed "post." Then again, reliability is part of the quality assessment, the talent.

What product does your farm produce?

I’ve always thought that seasonal farm work is probably the one area where temporary, migrant workers can’t be replaced except by automation.

Paring down? How ‘bout the only legal remedy: abolish any/all welfare instead?

- Illegal aliens have no carrot to come
- The able will then need to work, or rely upon *actual* charity.
- The People can do what they will w/ their property.
- Lower tax burden + lower centralized power + lower social engineering

Yes, you are correct about the huge difference between H1B and H2B.

H1B is an excuse for employers to depress wages and use skilled foreigners as quasi-slaves (i.e. 70 to 80 hour work weeks) to the exclusion of Americans, particularly STEM educated ones in the early years of their careers.

Seasonal H2B is a different animal. It’s like a summer employment program for teenagers. On the Cape, typically there is a somewhat organized lodging system for these imported workers. The key is that the population to be served by supermarkets and the like expands several fold during the summer season. There aren’t enough local teenagers. A few weeks after Labor Day, people stop visiting and the H2B’s go home.

Whether you're a giant corporation or a mom-and-pop: if you can't make it in your market sector while paying American wages to American workers, you need to leave that market sector rather than undermine the American standard of living. MAGA!

“There have always been migrant farm workers, there should be a legal way to do that.”

Not sure about the “always” part, but the draft in WWII took all the able bodied young men from the farms and Mexicans came to do much of the manual labor. My older brother tells me that we used German prisoners of war. Some military would bring them in the morning and pick them up in the evening.

I agree. Trump should withhold tax cuts from public corporations. Give them to private companies which would be most small and medium size business.
