Salon Slams National Anthem as 'Neo-Confederate Symbol'
PJ Media ^ | August 31, 2017 | Toni Airaksinen

Jefferson Morley, a staff writer for Salon, recently declared that the National Anthem, war memorials, and holidays that honor veterans are in fact “Neo-Confederate symbols” in disguise.

In a Sunday article, Morley slammed America’s beloved "The Star Spangled Banner" as emblematic of America’s sins, juxtaposing it with America’s history of “legalized slavery," “Jim Crow laws and legalized lynchings,” and derided the “militaristic and racist overtones” in the song’s lyrics:

Earth to Mr. Morley, the lyrics for the Star Spangled Banner was written decades before the civil war started. The movement to make the song the official national anthem was organic in nature rising up from the people across the country. The song became official when by Herbert Hoover signed the bill passed by a GOP controlled Congress. One can say many things about Hoover but being a Neo-Confederate is not one of them. /src on/I did not know I am a racist for admiring the actual flag at the Smithsonian./src off/

The left wants to destroy all the symbols of this country. They hate the country, and therefore hate the national anthem no matter what it says!
The current mass hysteria that the media generated after Charlottesville is an excuse.
F*ck the left.

I don’t know, but I suppose the reason for public singing of the anthem initially could have been a sort of virtue signalling to show one WASN’T a confederate or confederate sympathizer.

First, they went after Indian names of sports teams. And I didn’t up for the Indians as I wan’t an Indian.

Then, they went after Confederate generals. And I didn’t stand up for the Confederate generals as I wasn’t a southerner.

Then, they went after Abraham Lincoln. And. I didn’t stand up for Lincoln because I wasn’t a Yankee.

Then, they went after the American flag, And there was nobody left to stand up for the country.

...The left wants to destroy all the symbols of this country...
Does any of this sound familiar?

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten,  every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered.
And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped.
Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”...George Orwell, “1984”

Get with it: history is now fungible ... does not matter when, where, or what occurred - no one remembers any way, so it could have happened that way, and, if not, who cares as the charge is always true.

Salon and others will call for the name ‘America’ to be eliminated as it is racially insensitive and offensive.

I bet they would love to have that here today. So when is the Star Spangled Banner going to be replaced? A new Flag? Let me guess, does it have rainbow colors? Why do I have this feeling of my country trying to self destruct? (Rhet.)

Why can’t they redefine the meaning of the anthem, the monuments, and anything else they hate?

“queer” used to be a slur. Now it’s a major part of their politics (lgbtQ).

They’ve taken all/any meaning from “racist”, “man”, “women”, etc.

The n-word used to be unacceptable in any context. Now they “own” it and can decide who is/isn’t allowed to use it.

White hoods used to be a symbol of the Democratic Party. They redefined it to represent republicans.

Seems easier to redefine the symbol or take away the meaning of the anthem than fight to change it /sarc

The historical bankruptcy and ignorance of the left for all to see.

50 years of not teaching history in public schools.

The answer here is to Hold them to the Exact Same Standards and start Demanding Loudly that ALL Monuments celebrating the Murderous Spaniards and their Descendants need to be Demolished Immediately.

Spanish colonization of the Americas
A 16th-century illustration by Flemish Protestant Theodor de Bry for Las Casas’s Brevisima relación de la destrucción de las Indias, depicting Spanish atrocities during the conquest of Cuba

It is estimated that during the initial Spanish conquest of the Americas up to eight million indigenous people died, marking the first large-scale act of genocide of the modern era.[29] Acts of brutality in the Caribbean and the systematic annihilation occurring on the Caribbean islands prompted Dominican friar Bartolomé de las Casas to write Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias (”A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies”) in 1552. Las Casas wrote that the indigenous population on the Spanish colony of Hispaniola had been reduced from 400,000 to 200 in a few decades.[30] His writings were among those that gave rise to Leyenda Negra (Black Legend) to describe Spanish cruelty in the Indies.[31] Noble David Cook, writing about the Black Legend and the conquest of the Americas wrote, “There were too few Spaniards to have killed the millions who were reported to have died in the first century after Old and New World contact” and instead suggests the near total decimation of the indigenous population of Hispaniola as mostly having been caused by diseases like smallpox.[32]

With the initial conquest of the Americas completed, the Spanish implemented the encomienda system. In theory, encomienda placed groups of indigenous peoples under Spanish oversight to foster cultural assimilation and conversion to Christianity, but in practice led to the legally sanctioned exploitation of natural resources and forced labor under brutal conditions with a high death rate. Though the Spaniards did not set out to exterminate the indigenous peoples, believing their numbers to be inexhaustible, their actions led to the annihilation of entire tribes such as the Arawak.[33] In the 1760s, an expedition despatched to fortify California, led by Gaspar de Portolà and Junípero Serra, was marked by slavery, forced conversions and genocide through the introduction of disease.[34]

Located in San Diego, California’s Point Loma neighborhood, this monument was erected to pay homage to Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who led the first European expedition to explore what is now known as the West Coast of the United States. He was a conquistador who served under the leadership of in infamous Hernan Cortez. This journey of discovery started June 27, 1542, and three months later, he arrived at Point Loma. Cabrillo also journeyed further north, where later landed in Monterey Bay and Point Reyes, California. He unfortunately died during his expedition, so he never made it to San Fransisco, but his crew pushed as far north as Oregon.

The Cabrillo National Monument was established in 1913 after being memorialized by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. The memorial is part of California’s National Park Service and includes tidepools, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, walking trails, a statue of Cabrillo, a whale outlook and a bookstore/visitor center.
