Trump Bailed The GOP Congress Out In 2016 – He Can’t Do It Again In 2018

Let’s talk about congressional Republicans. A year ago today, Republicans in congress were possibly the single most-detested part of the ruling class in Washington, DC. They had, as a group, made more false and failed promises to voters over the previous seven years than almost any such collective group of politicians in American history. They were headed at that point for a thrashing at the voting booths, with “experts” and polls indicating the GOP would lose its Senate majority and could possibly lose the House as well, if Hillary Clinton defeated Donald Trump in a landslide in the presidential contest.

But a funny thing happened on the way to electoral disaster: Donald Trump ran what was certainly an unconventional compaign, but one that was also a rousing success. The media-promoted and projected Clinton landslide became a crushing defeat for her, and it also bailed the GOP congress out, allowing the Party to retain control of both houses of congress.

Suddenly, congressional Republicans were back. Contrary to the prevailing “wisdom” among DC “experts”, it wasn’t the GOP that was falling apart and doomed to ultimate destruction, it was the Democrats. And it wasn’t just in Washington: the results of the 2016 elections gave the GOP control of 2/3rds of the nation’s governorships, 2/3rds of the nation’s legislative chambers, and the Party was about to cement a narrow, 5/4 conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court with the confirmation of Justice Gorsuch.

Trump could make a MASSIVE difference in the primaries, though- and fix the second half of his term.

I hope he realizes that quickly.

I live in central FL, which puts me in an electoral dilemma.

I will vote for my GOP congressman because he’s a schlub and will follow the leadership, so I am more concerned about the leadership, all of which is outside my state.

I will vote for practically anyone the GOP puts up against Dem Sen. Bill Nelson, because practically anyone would be better than another six years of liberal Democrat nonsense. The GOP knows this, and so will maneuver to run a Rubio-like controllable squishie, unless Trump specifically supports someone who will specifically support his agenda.

Finally, I will vote for practically anyone the GOP puts up against Dem ambulance chaser John Morgan (”Morgan and Morgan, For the People dot com”), because practically anyone would be better than four years of liberal Democrat nonsense in Tallahassee. The GOP knows this, and so will maneuver to run a squishie who is left of the present Gov. Scott, unless Trump specifically supports someone who will specifically support his agenda.

I hope to God Trump understands this, and how it is likely to be a similar scenario in dozens of states next year. He needs to be playing the long game, because both his sets of enemies, the liberal Dems and the GOP squishies, are playing the long game against him.

What he needs to do is have MAGA candidates that he personally endorses primary obstructionist RINOs.

The voters will know what to do.

One more step: Conservatives should take a page out of the leftists’ book and find DINOs to run in ‘Rat primaries. That way even in a RINO gets the nod for the Pubbies, there’s still a conservative on the ballot in November.

then those members who refuse to repeat that repeal vote had better start looking for something to do in their post-senate careers.

It does not matter to them that they might be entering their "post senatorial" careers in one year. Those careers are assured and will be much more lucrative than their senatorial careers. The Chamber of Commerce and George Soros have guaranteed that. Conversely if they do not toe the proper line, their Senate careers, if they continue, will be much less remuneratory and their post senatorial careers will be relatively bleak, lobbying positions not being available. It makes no financial sense for them to vote for Repeal or for anything else anathema to the CC and Soros.

It is long past time that the people can do accomplish anything material with Congressional votes and being able to vote a principled leader into the Presidency is still more of a fluke than something that can be deliberately done. The Republic is done. We have to depend on one man at the top to take control and yall know what that does to a Republic, but that is where we are. No change in Congress will accomplish anything other than change the personnel who represent George Soros and Mr. Donohue.

Never underestimate the Republican Party's ability to snatch utter defeat from the jaws of victory. Perhaps we should not be surprised at the events of the last eight months simply because the President was not ever truly a member of the GOP establishment.

What about Collins with a capital "C"?

How will the literate folks vote?

Will your vote count if you can't grasp capitalization?

Dem vs Pubbie I will vote Pubbie every time unless maybe if it were Paul Ryan. As long as President Trump is still fighting I have a reason to vote.
