If you sadly live in New Jersey, New York, Maryland or Massachusetts and actually like firearms, your list of legal AR-15s can probably fit on the bar napkin you drink your sorrows away on. OK, that is slightly over the top, but legal ones are few and far between. Ruger is adding to that list with a new AR-556 with a MonsterMan grip.
Some notable features, or modifications depending on how you look at it, that make it legal in the aforementioned states are:
-Threaded Barrel (1/2″ x 28 TPI) w/ Thread Protector [No Flash Hider or Muzzle Device]
-Fixed A2 Stock [No Scary Collapsible Stock]
-10-Round Magazine [None of that High-Cap Nonsense]
MonsterMan Grip [It Aint a Pistol Grip If Your Hand Cant Go All the Way Around]

Lame but effective.
Apparently thumb hole stocks have been banned, I actually like them on hunting rifles.
I replaced my A2 style stock with a slidefire.
Check the feed lips/lockup
Then toss it, they cost $12 bucks
That’s pretty damned ugly.
It looks like they took the grip handle out of the plastic mold and didn’t remove the excess flashing.
Get an AR15, believe me.
>>>What is funny is with that standard removable magazine catch, I believe it is still illegal on the Peoples Rupublik of Kalifornia<<<
In CA they made a Law years ago that required a “tool” to remove the Magazine, then somebody invented the “Bullet Button”.
The CA Commies imagined the Tool requirement would make changing Magazines tedious, but with practice you can switch out the Magazine in two seconds using the Bullet Button.
Needless to say, that didn’t go over well. Now they are changing the Law again, and the CA Compliant AR’s with the Bullet Button are being reclassified as Assault Weapons requiring Registration.
In other words, I will be a Overnight Felon if I don’t comply. No Grandfather clause. One minute you are a Law Abiding Citizen, the next you are a Criminal.
Oh yeah, one other thing. Every Handgun or Long Gun (including Shotguns) purchased in CA must be Registered. That is why I will buy no more Weapons while I live here.
There is a 10 Day Waiting Period and now they are pushing through a One per Month Purchase Limit Law for ALL Firearms.
Imagine, if you buy an aftermarket Hand Grip to replace that hideous contraption you are Guiltier than Hillary Clinton leaking National Secrets.
What a Country we have become.
The one that is giving me trouble is a Magpul. The other Magpul that I have works perfectly.
The one that is causing problems seems to not raise the cartridge high enough, so the bolt will travel right over the top of it instead of scraping into the firing chamber, and this causes minor damage to the surface of the bullet and its casing on top of jamming the rifle.
I’m not sure if the damage is severe enough to make the bullet dangerous to fire after clearing it, but I have not tried to fire on of these, so it basically wastes a round each time this happens.
It looks stupid ugly.
Toss it.
You cannot effectively add material to the lockup.
I have an AK in 223 like that.
Wont lookup E German Mags, consistently so, the problem is the mag catch needs replaced and fitted.
You have one rogue mag.
Smoking frog saw my AR do that once.
It locked up solid, I said yer the AR guy, have a look at this.
After mush cursing he said when was the last time you cleaned this thing?
I said 2500 rounds ago, its an endurance test :)
Don't you know that turns it into a killing machine?!
Oh, so you hate it because it's black?
No AR-racism, please. :-)
That cheap Russian ammo didn’t help much either.
Brownell mags are excellent!
It was an endurance test! LOL
Gawd that thing was filthy! LOL
Wyndham? you mean Bushmaster?
I need a bayonet mount too. Stick a few marshmallows on the bayonet after the barrel heats up real good and they’ll be cooked to perfection.
“...buying a Ruger Mini-14 because its kind of clutter-free.”
