“This is all about making driving unaffordable for the masses and forcing them to move into socialist hives(cities).”
Not at all. Technology is getting to the place where self-driving cars will be cheaper, faster, and safer than human drivers.
It will likely result in people being more open to longer commutes. People are likely to conduct business while riding and even have meals.
This is a disruptive technology, so it will have its downsides. But cars are better than riding in a horse-drawn buggy. And self-driving cars will be a step up for the most part.
There will probably be a transition where cars can be driven by people or by computers. Over time people will gravitate to the benefits of self-driving. And eventually self-driving will become too risky and cost-prohibitive.
When I was a kid we had a rotary phone. Touch-tone service was introduced as an upgrade. Eventually touch-tone was free, then rotary was an extra charge, and then it went away. Now everyone has a cell phone. Is that better? In some respects, yes. In others, no.
Look at all of the technological change that happened in the last 200 years. More is happening today than ever before. Change is happening at a more rapid pace. Now we have to adapt more quickly.
You should be able to get quite a bit of use out of it before this all take place. Eventually driving cars will be considered to risky, and insurance will spike. Be prepared to sell at the top of the bell curve.
“Not likely to happen as long as there are destinations too far off the map.”
There are few places that a car could be driven that next generation navigation and communications will not reach. For those places there will probably be specialty vehicles or older ones still in use. It will probably be possible to 3D print replacement parts for old cars by then. And the patents will be expired also.
Cars are already a maintenance nightmare with the technology they have today. Adding more on top of it makes them even more of a nightmare. The 5 year depreciation will be horrible. As long as we retain the option of driving it manually when the shit breaks then I am good. But the a-holes that run the world will probably get rid of that option.
When they reference 2050 it makes me laugh. I’ll be 90 years old.
naaaah..... people will pass the time in their commutes playing video games and watching stupid pet trick videos.
This article wrongly assumes everyone can adapt, and that’s not true. High unemployment among those least able to redefine themselves leads to drug addiction, crime, despair and depression. It is why the displacement of working class American men in the workforce by women and immigrants has led to declines in their life expectancy.
And driver is the most common job category in many states, filled disproportionately from the working class.

They’ll do wonders for the vehicle bomb industry. No suicidal inbred required.
Two vehicles approaching each other on a curved highway on a hill, traveling 70 mph each in opposite directions, relying on an Internet of Things for their precision passing one another an missing each other by less than 2 ft. what could possibly go wrong? It’s not like our PCs ever fail nor the internet fail.....
I don’t think many people will own cars when this is fully implemented. Sure, at first cars will have the ability to drive themselves or be driven by humans.
Later, cars will be mostly a service. Dealerships will disappear.
Shorter commutes or simply budget-conscious travelers will probably use no-frills cars. But where will these trips go? The grocery store? Groceries will probably be delivered to your door.
For longer trips, you may walk out your door, anywhere, and immediately step into a luxury vehicle with amenities similar to an office, living room, or dining room. It will drive you anywhere. There will be a service industry that caters to riders.
And all of this will be far cheaper than what you pay now, as a percentage of your income, on total cost of ownership for your car. It will be safer, faster, more convenient, and cheaper than having a single car today, but it will be better than every family member having his or her own car and chauffeur.
“When they reference 2050 it makes me laugh. Ill be 90 years old.”
I think Jesus will come back before then, but if He delays, who knows how advanced technology will become.
Ninety may become the new middle age with an average life span of 180.
Of course if this involves implanted computer technology, count me out. Not sure what the “mark of the beast” constitutes just yet, but I’m sure it is going to be something invasive and identity altering.
Funny how salaries NEVER keep up with technology. Technology is making us poorer not richer. When I was growing up you had a phone bill, an electric bill and a mortgage. Now add DSL/data, satellite/cable TV, cell phone bill - it really adds up. Without paying for all of this crap I'd be retired already.
Now we want exotic robo cars. Good grief.

The technology has been here for years. RCA had a prototype of a self-driving car that they were testing in Princeton, NJ in 1960 (yes, that’s almost 60 years ago!). What has held up the proliferation of these self-driving cars is that the technology isn’t reliable and precise enough to do what everyone thinks it’s supposed to do (drive with no driver at all) ... but it MUST do what everyone thinks it’s supposed to do before it really has any value to anyone. A car that is 99% autonomous is really no better than a car that is 0% autonomous.
so self-driving cars are going to make LA traffic disappear?
no...acesss to self-driving cars by those who don’t already own a car will add to traffic by putting more, not less, vehicles on the road
Yes, it is essentially a train.
All the cars going the same speed.
Only difference is you would have a private compartment.
I’d rather take a train than be in a driverless car.
The first lawsuit stemming from two self-driving cars colliding will be interesting.
