Journalists have been indoctrinated in the belief that it's only news when they report it. They determine what is news and what is not. So, everything not from them is "fake."

They've managed to convince their followers that fake news means goofy stuff on the internet, possibly coming out of eastern Europe and their current boogie man Russia. Why not? That's how it was done during the Cold War when they were paid to pass it on to us in the West.

They cannot let it get out that by "fake news" we mean their misreporting ad nauseam and their outright lies. If it does, their whole ediface crumbles.
