If you’re a Democrat, 2016 was “the good ol’ days.” Back then, you were safely ensconced in the arrogant assumption that Hillary Clinton would be the next President. You were 100% sure that Donald Trump was guaranteed to suffer a humiliating defeat, and your socialist utopia would be secured by the ascension of the first female President.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way. Russians must be behind it. Or sexism. ...Or that monster, James Comey. Oh sure, you wanted him fired, but that was last year. Now that Donald Trump has acquiesced to your former demands, it’s a constitutional crisis.
...Apparently, you’ve forgotten that - just about six months ago - people like Valerie Jarret, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi were setting the stage for Hillary to do exactly the same thing.
As the New York Post reported, Jarrett wanted Obama to save the Clinton candidacy by firing Comey:
In a last-minute effort to save Hillary Clinton’s bid for the White House, Barack Obama’s chief adviser, Valerie Jarrett, has urged the president to fire FBI Director James Comey, according to a source close to Jarrett.
Obama and Jarrett are furious with Comey for reopening the FBI’s investigation of Clinton’s emails just 11 days before the presidential election.

It’s no secret that Obama harbors contempt for the FBI director. As quoted in “Guilty as Sin,” Obama fumes to Jarrett that appointing Comey was his “worst mistake as president.”
In what looked like a concerted effort to call for Comey’s head, Nancy Pelosi, the minority leader in the House of Representatives, suggested that Comey might be removed from his post, saying in an interview with CNN, “Maybe he’s not in the right job.”
And where to begin with Chuck Schumer? Bloomberg famously reported that he’d “lost confidence” in Comey back in November, just like everyone else:

Schumer (D-NY) Stated That “You Could Say If Comey Wasn’t There We Would Have Won.” ‘When you lose to a candidate who is so unpopular—yes, you could say if Comey wasn’t there we would have won,’ he went on, referring to James Comey, the F.B.I. director. ‘But we should have won anyway, with Comey and with the hacking.’” (Elizabeth Kolbert, “Can Chuck Schumer Check Donald Trump?,” The New Yorker, 3/27/17)
If you think, even for a second, that a victorious Hillary Clinton would have kept Comey around, you’re really kidding yourself. Everything we know about the Clinton machine tells us that he would have been replaced the minute she took office. All the examples above - and many, many, others - were setting the stage for the FBI Director’s firing when she took office. Heck, Comey probably ended his career when he outlined all the crimes that Hillary had “unintentionally” committed. If not, he definitely sealed his fate when he re-opened the investigation.
Either way, had Mrs. Clinton become President, Comey would have immediately been shown the door - and Democrats would have cheered the demise of their scapegoat.
