Ryan video: We need to simplify the tax code so you could file on a postcard

An idea so great . . . we've heard it many times before. Now will someone please make it happen?

Not remarkable: A Republican officeholder says the tax code should be simplified to the point where you could file your taxes on a postcard. We’ve been hearing this since the days of Ronald Reagan at least (maybe people were saying it before that but I would have been too young to remember), and it’s one of the few policy ideas that Republicans of all stripes can agree on, at least in theory. That said, no one has ever advanced a serious bill designed to make it happen.

Somewhat remarkable: The Republican officeholder saying it now is the Speaker of the House, who is in a very strong position to potentially make it happen, and who actually put a fair amount of effort into developing a video that makes the prospect of not adopting this change seem pretty insane. Hmmmmm . . .

Fair Tax eliminates the postcard too.

I have no doubt that they will make this happen....with a catch.

They will say, "You have the option of doing your taxes on a postcard. If you would like to take advantage of all of these loopholes and write offs and exemptions you will have the option of paying accountants and tax lawyers to do it the right way on long forms."

They aren't stupid. They are not going to tear up their meal ticket. Micromanaging the tax code creates political contributions.

We shouldn’t have to file anything with the feds. Let them send the bill to the states, and let the states figure out how to collect it.

“First off, pay the debt down to zero by dedicating a tax on stock and bond trading of an amount TBD.”

Have you seen the debt lately? I don’t think that would cover it. Besides, if you tax stock and bond trading, people would just trade some other investments instead to avoid the tax, and since so much of our economy is artificially propped up by the stock market, it might just trigger another recession.

Oh how I hope to live long enough to see the day that this actually happens.....You never will. The tax code is actually another form of welfare.

The 16th needs abolished.

ALL of the "Progressive Era" amendments need to be abolished.

That’s basically what happens in Japan. The company actually pays all your taxes and you just get a statement (at least according to my wife). Unless you’re unemployed then you have to go down to the city hall and fill out a form.
