I thought “muzzle blast” was the flash and fire that issues from the muzzle once the bullet leaves the barrel, allowing flames and smoke to blast out behind it.

The story I heard was that John Moses Browning observed grass being pushed down from the muzzle blast of a rifle and was inspired to harness that power to create a semi-auto rifle.
No, but I might wonder how much power comes from the muzzle BRAKE of a rifle. A broken muzzle wouldn't work too well.

There’s usually more energy in the gas exiting the barrel than there is in the bullet. Muzzle blast almost always is responsible for more of the recoil than the bullet is. One reason why suppressors also are effective muzzle brakes.
