House Republicans approve changes in advance of AHCA vote later today

Coverage requirements eliminated, Medicaid benefits strengthened for elderly and handicapped people.

What I keep hearing is that they’re working toward a vote of the full House at 3 p.m., although that could always change if they need more time to corral the votes. They just took a procedural vote, which doesn’t pass the bill but allows it to be amended as follows:

Republicans have pushed the GOP health care overhaul past an initial procedural hurdle in the House.

Friday’s procedural vote was 230-194. That moves the chamber toward a climactic final vote that’s a big gamble for President Donald Trump and congressional leaders.

The early vote inserted changes into the measure that leaders hoped would win over unhappy Republicans. It would improve Medicaid benefits for some older and handicapped people and abolish coverage requirements President Barack Obama’s 2010 law imposes on insurers. If they’re talking about the “Essential Health Benefits” that the House Freedom Caucus has been demanding be repealed, they’ve either decided this will fly under reconciliation in the Senate or they’ve just decided to get something passed in the House with the understanding the Senate’s going to change it anyway and the whole thing will end up in conference committee.

That was always going to happen anyway so I don’t really see the point of the HFC being so obstinate. Nothing can go anywhere if the House doesn’t pass some kind of bill. Some of them like to preen for their base and show everyone what heroes they are because they “stood up for conservative principles” or whatever, but the fact of the matter remains that if no bill ever even gets to the Senate because they won’t support it, then they’re the ones who saved ObamaCare.

My guess is that this amendment is Ryan’s move to get enough HFC members on board that he can get some sort of bill through the House and over to the Senate, which will then rip it to pieces and craft its own. But that was always going to happen, notwithstanding Mitch McConnell’s initial (and weird) insistence that he would take the House bill and send it straight to the Senate floor for an up or down vote.

If anything, that might have added ot the reluctance of HFC members to back the House bill, since McConnell’s threat raised the spectre of a quickie vote with no opportunity whatsoever to address any objections or concerns about the bill.

We’ll keep an eye on this. I would be very surprised if Ryan brings this to a floor vote without ascertaining he’s got enough support to pass it, but you never know.

We need a “10th Amendment Restoration” bill to repeal all of progressivism at the federal level.

My guess Turtle doesn't send it straight to the floor. If it does get through, is that the Turtle does their Senate bill then it goes to joint committee that gets voted on before summer recess. The chances of the final bill being acceptable to get through Congress is at best 50/50 ... probably worse odds.

Republicans are tying to develop a responsible, managed withdrawal from Obamacare, recognizing that millions of people now rely on it and need a replacement in place before we dynamite what they have. I am not optimistic that such a responsible withdrawal can be passed, but it should certainly be the first option.

If THAT fails: time for Plan B. Grab the rhetorical high ground, and keep it simple. Announce that "if you like your plan, you can keep it." All we need to do is make participation in Obamacare voluntary. Allow anyone who wishes to withdraw, including employers, to do so. Obamacare can be funded by those who choose to stay. Just for fun, we could also assign all registered Democrats to the system, since it has sacramental significance to them. Those who withdraw would be freed of all the mandates and would be allowed to purchase whatever they pleased. Community rating and guaranteed issue could remain for Obamacare. They would be repealed for those who exit.

As a rhetorical position, again, keep it simple. If you like Obamacare, you can keep it. But make it a choice, not a prison.

Obamacare would instantly collapse. but that's not our problem.

Does anyone know what this socialized medical monstrosity truly involves? Is there a payment and/or premium schedule as in the private insurance programs?

I have Medicare. Today I received a routine Part D report. What shocked me was a translation notice for/in 64 foreign languages stating “If you speak..... language- assistance services, free of charge, are available to you.

Question: How much is this linguist staffing costing the taxpayers??? How would someone be eligible for Medicare, if they never learned English? How would they have worked, paid SS etc.?

If your asked to take a bite out of a poop sandwich then what difference does it make if the Senate adds some lettuce and pickles to it? And the end of the day it's still a poop sandwich that should never have been passed in the first place.

"Nothing can go anywhere if the House doesn’t pass some kind of bill."

Then why not pass a Conservative bill?

Conservatives would be suckers to vote for a RINO bill on the promise that it will be fixed later.

Insurance companies have to support 150 languages (no joke). It is expensive and pointless. It is part of the inefficiency of government regulations replacing the free market.
