DES MOINES, Iowa -- Senate Democrats are speaking out after a bill was recently introduced that would drastically change how state professors are hired.
Republican Senator Mark Chelgren of Ottumwa's proposed bill would freeze professor hiring at state universities until the faculty is balanced in terms of political ideology.
This means, for example, a professor registered as a Democrat would not be hired unless the amount of Democrat and Republican faculty members at the school is within 10% of each other.

Just do not state party affiliation when submitting resume
The first thing these legislators should consider is the amount and type of grant, assistance, contracts and research they conduct for the Federal Government.
IIRC, it is against EEO to consider a bunch of factors in hiring - of which political persuasion is one integral part.
They risk losing Federal dollars over this, even if it does increase the number of conservative professors to be on par with the leftists.
I hope Senator Chelgren is simply trying to make a point and does not actually think this is a good idea.
LOL!
Force the universities to accept REAL diversity. Diversity of opinion!
The intention is good to remedy today’s lock step Leftist universities, but quotas are also not good. The question is who can be trusted now to hire based upon their having really solid academic credentials, not the nonsense fields and the nonsense studies that have passed for 40 years as scholarship. That is the question. Those who could have known the difference between political hacks and quality professors are mostly retired or dead.
Or do what the lefties do - lie...
that was my first thought- but I thought I would take the high road :)
65+ years, and it has only gotten worse.
Sounds like one of those demonstrative bills, like recent efforts that would make it legal, or at least not punishable, to drive your car over road-blocking protestors. The filing of the bill sends a message whether or not it becomes law.
I see his point but don’t think that is a good idea. The response to Columbia liberal driven media was Fox News. So maybe the response is better/more funding for private conservative Universities?
Sure. And purge all social media entries, and political campaign contributions, and student organizations they belonged to. And get everyone to lie for you when they check your personal and professional references.
This is nothing more than “Affirmative Action Hiring” based on ideology rather than race. All the same “benefits of diversity” arguments could be made for this. I’ll bet the Dims oppose Affirmative Action when it doesn’t favor them.
