On his fifth day in the oval office, President Trump, over dinner with Secretary of Defense Mattis and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was presented with the first of many life-or-death decisions he will be required make. The mission presented to the President for his approval involved a raid on the small, heavily guarded brick home of a senior Qaeda collaborator in a mountainous village in a remote part of central Yemen.
Mr. Obama’s national security aides had reviewed the plans but Obama would not approve the mission because the Pentagon wanted to launch the attack on a moonless night and the next one would come after his term had ended. The purpose of the mission was to capture computers, cellphones and other intelligence containing apparatus from an al Qaeda camp near a mountain village.
President Trump, however, approved the mission.
The raiders consisted of commandos from the United Arab Emirates and Navy SEALS from SEAL Team 6. The operation had been planned and prepared for months. The mission was part of a long, multinational campaign to weaken the foothold of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), long considered one of the most dangerous arms of the terrorist organization.
Tragically, what should have been a well-rehearsed mission was compromised. It may have been a barking dog, or a crashed drone or radio chatter. Via area communications intercept the attackers learned that the mission was compromised, but pressed on toward their target. Military Intelligence sources confirmed that the terrorists were aware that they were the target of the early morning raid. A firefight resulted in the heavy loss of life. The SEALS and the UAE Commandos walked into an ambush.

President Trump needs to make fresh plans for raids on our enemies...
Not every mission is successful, nor accomplished without casualties. In no way does this diminish the heroism and courage of those who conduct them, nor does it alter the weight of the decision-makers who authorize them.
We now have a President who will follow the best advice of his military leaders without regard for politics.
Promoting that we only want to do these raids on a moonless night also seems like phoney information.
Yeah, it would seem to be a benefit, if the enemy doesn’t now have night vision equipment, but it also seems our enemies would step up their alert on nights like that.
It just seems contrived to get Obama off the hook.
We have to assume that everything has been compromised. The Odumbo administration had Muslim Brotherhood members up and down the command chain.
I deeply resent the left for voting that azz into office.
Trump acted correctly.
Why in the world would they continue the mission when they knew they had lost the element of surprise?
What sick monsters, warning our enemy about the mission for a political hit against the new President.
Trump followed the advice of his military commanders. That’s a good thing. The idea that Obama’s national security aides nixed the mission because it was not on a moonless night is indicative of how the Obama administration micromanaged our military operations. It reminds me of LBJ and Vietnam. Military operations are being dictated by domestic political considerations.
Do we know that as a fact or is this more fake news?
I still can't resolve that one. If the enemy knew about the raid before hand most likely they would keep quiet.

I wasn’t on the mission and I haven’t talked to anybody who was.
I have read that six additional Americans were wounded and that the Osprey couldn’t fly and had to be destroyed by us.
I’m a firm believer in cold, hard AARs for every mission.
Let the chips fall where they may.
Tactical decisions must be examined. The people who made those decisions must be evaluated.
I knew we were in trouble when the memo came down telling us it wasn’t fair to evaluate Soldiers based on their performance during combat.
What then should you evaluate Soldiers on?
How fast they run?
I believe we had “partners” with us on that mission from another nation.
They may have leaked the details.

More trouble from the Marine Corps flying coffin.
Achieving the objective of the mission. It appears they did that.
It would be interesting to see the evaluation of the leader of this operation.
