A top deputy to National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was rejected for a critical security clearance, effectively ending his tenure on the National Security Council and escalating tensions between Flynn and the intelligence community.
The move came as Flynn’s already tense relationships with others in the Trump administration and the intelligence community were growing more fraught after reports that Flynn had breached diplomatic protocols in his conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States.
On Friday, one of Flynn’s closest deputies on the National Security Council, senior director for Africa Robin Townley, was informed that the Central Intelligence Agency had rejected his request for an elite security clearance required for service on the NSC, according to two people with direct knowledge of the situation.
That forced Townley, a former Marine intelligence officer who had long maintained a top secret-level security clearance, out of his NSC post, explained the sources, who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive personnel matters.
One of the sources said that the rejection was approved by Trump’s CIA director Mike Pompeo and that it infuriated Flynn and his allies.
Both sources said that the CIA did not offer much explanation for why Townley’s request for so-called “Sensitive Compartmented Information” clearance was rejected. But the sources said that Flynn and his allies believe it was motivated by Townley’s skepticism of the intelligence community’s techniques — sentiments shared by Flynn.
“They believe this is a hit job from inside the CIA on Flynn and the people close to him,” said one source, who argued that some in the intelligence community feel threatened by Flynn and his allies. “Townley believes that the CIA doesn’t run the world," the source said.

Plenty of federal employees have dual citizenship and hold ‘top’ secret clearances. I know 3 myself.
There are examples of individuals serving in foreign paramilitaries and then holding senior Obama White House positions with ( very likely) top security clearances.

Where do you think the conversations of Flynn and the Russsian Ambassador that were leaked came from? Obviously from within the US intel community.
Well, we now know they are out to get him.
Dual citizenship shoul not even be allowed. When did it start? No voting in our elections, at least.
Dual Citizenship has always existed. However, only in recent period has it become an issue with so many globe trotting families.
My concern is how can a dual citizen hold top security clearances ? How can someone with openly sworn divided loyalty be trusted to keep our countries interests first ?
Even if the individual is a dual Canadian-US citizen there are serious questions if divided loyalty, much less Chinese-US or Egypt-US.
It’s confusing that this is even a question.
If we can grant TS//SCI clearances with multiple compartments to foreign nationals - which we do routinely (Five Eyes - FVEY), we can certainly grant the same level of access to a fully-vetted US Marine who is holding officially sanctioned dual citizenship. The US routinely exchanges some of the most highly-classified information there is with our closest allies and we have done so for years.
Keep in mind that a substantial proportion of CIA employees, especially those outside the National Clandestine Service (NCS), are Ivy League graduates - particularly from Harvard. The Agency has been recruiting heavily from the Ivy League for a long time and if you’ve dealt with any of their “analysts” in recent years, you’d know they’re very liberal and dumb as a stump, with no real experience in much of anything - kind of like the NSC staff.
One other point to keep in mind: There is a direct and inextricable relationship between the CIA and the State Department and the degrees of separation between the two is vanishingly small. Mike Flynn, whom I happen to know, poses a real threat to the status quo in the IC. He’s one of a very small number of senior Military leaders who refused to play politics and knows the Intelligence Community, its capabilities and limitations, and all its warts from a strategic and tactical perspective.
Mike wrote this report and published it via CNAS in direct violation of DoD policy. Conclude from that what you like, but he’s a guy who is committed to doing the right things for the right reasons.
People can have dual citizenship and not know it. The idea that someone who moved here as a baby and lived here all their life is less patriotic, by genetics, than Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama is absurd.

The CIA FREEZED HIM OUT BECAUSE IF THEY HAD GIVEN HIM SCI CLEARANCE THEN HE WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET INTO THE SCIF AREAS AND FIND OUT WHO WAS LEAKING TS SCI INFO. SIMPLE.
IN FACT HE PROBABLY HAD THE CLEARANCE BUT WAS DENIED ACCESS ON A NEED TO KNOW BASIS.
