Activists Call for a Nationwide Strike in Protest of President Trump: February 17th

Concerned that protests might be too easy to ignore, activists are now calling for a nationwide strike in order to demonstrate just how many people disapprove of President Donald Trump.

First proposed in a column for The Guardian on Monday, American writer Francine Prose called for a "nonviolent national general strike" that can't be "easily ignored and forgotten by those who wish to ignore and forget them."

"Let’s designate a day on which no one (that is, anyone who can do so without being fired) goes to work, a day when no one shops or spends money, a day on which we truly make our economic and political power felt, a day when we make it clear: how many of us there are, how strong and committed we are, how much we can accomplish," she wrote.

Since then, many appear to have put the wheels in motion to make the national strike a reality, with activists agreeing it should take place on Feb. 17, the Friday before President's Day. The Independent reports that so far, much of the planning appears to be taking place on social media, without the official involvement of any unions.

"At this dangerous point in our history, we must confront a bitter truth: any political system that can allow Donald Trump to come to power is not a system worth keeping," one Facebook page dedicated to the strike reads. "We walk out of our homes, our places of work, and our schools, and we join our fellow citizens in the streets and online in a peaceful display of resistance and solidarity. We refuse to shop or otherwise participate in the rigged economy that Trump presides over and is beholden to. In this way, we defy the establishment and create an opening for reconstitution."

As Mic explains, general strikes are meant to bring together "a large number of employees across a broad spectrum of industries" and essentially halt the mechanics of a country enough to "advance a political or economic goal." The source adds that they tend to be more common in Europe than in the United States.

At this time, most people have been voicing their plans to participate using the hashtag #NationalStrike.

Are they not going to use their EBT cards for a day? That should bring America to her knees.

Pray America is waking

Sooner or later Conservatives are going to have to adopt these tactics for our causes. They should have been adopted throughout Obama’s two terms.

Boycotts don’t work and haven’t since the Caesar Chavez lettuce boycott.

One thing about cities: you cannot walk out the door without spending money for something. Most will still order online, order takeout and have to either forego pay or forego utilities/rent/parking/food/transport. They won’t.

But, but, isn’t the 15th a big ebt/food stamp fillup period ? A general strike would mean non foodstampters gobbling up all the meat family packs stocked up by stores on the 17th for the 18th weekend ebt shopping sprees. Oh the huge manitee.

Nice day they picked. Friday before a 3-day weekend. A LOT of people will be taking that Friday off anyway, just to extend their long weekend. Now they can claim those people are part of their “boycott.”

Americans have a loooooooooooooooooooong history of striking; however, our strikers usually struck over work related things; though not always.

Outside of usually regional strikes by teachers and the garbage men in NYC in the '80s, I can't think, off the top of my head, right now, of any MAJOR strikes, since the early 1960s.

The disgusting crap "marches" that the lefties, ban the bombers, and Commies pulled on Nixon, don't count at all; that wasn't a "strike".

What the morons have been and are pulling against President Trump are NOT "strikes" either.

LOL...don't know how you could have forgotten about the crazy French. :-)

I was speaking about general strikes - I don’t know that there’s ever been a general strike in America.

The "grape boycott" didn't really work.

When that was happening, I went marketing, came oujt of the grocery store to find a bunch of dirty protestors, hadn't bought grapes, went back in, bought some, came out and waved the grapes around and laughed AT them. And I wasn't alone. This was in NYC!

Grapes. Yes! Thanx. for some reason, I could only think of lettuce.

I had a young family at the time and I was mostly concerned with their nutrition and staying within my budget. I would feel a pang when I bought something *disallowed*, but it never stopped me.

Boycott, Buycott....most people just go on with their lives.

AFAIK lettuce wasn't ever on the list; it was grapes.

I was just as informed back then, as I am now, so I knew who Chavez was, knew what was going on, so did what I did on purpose; NO PANGS of anything for me! :-)

I've always been a CONSERVATIVE and for some reason, absolutely FEARLESS, in my salad days...when I was green. LOL

HELL YES.........BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOYCOTT!!!!!!!!!!!
