The state of Missouri took a stand against the generational dependence upon the government, forcing welfare recipients to get a job.
Approximately 41,000 Missouri residents no longer have access to the welfare food stamps program after a new time limit law went into effect in 2015. The new state law was actually a reinstatement of welfare reform enacted during President Bill Clintons administration.
The 1996 welfare law, which has now been reinstated, limited food stamps for able-bodies and childless adults to only three months out of every three years, America Now reports. Participants would continue to receive the taxpayer-funded benefits only if they worked 20 hours per week or attended an approved job training program.
We want people to go to work in Mississippi, Republican Governor Phil Bryant said when his state, like many others, ended the time limits and work/training restrictions for the food stamp program.
We want these individuals to get a good job and live the American dream, not just be dependent on the federal government.

We started working minimum wage jobs while teens, but worked our way up.
We stayed in school and many got post-graduate degrees.
We delayed having children until we were married and could afford to house and feed them.
We didn’t gamble, drink to excess, or get addicted to drugs.
What is so difficult about these things?
If there are no consequences for living irresponsibly, then people will live irresponsibly. And the irresponsible living will perpetuate itself from generation to generation.
The cycle has to be broken, even if there have to be transitional programs in the near future.
Unfortunately, people today don't learn Sociology. It got connected with handout programs and a desire to herd the underclass, which is a shame.
An example of an ancient WPA project is the pyramids. Ancient Egypt was a highly successful civilization and people had a whole lot of time on their hands. So very wise leaders had them occupied and paid building humongous monuments to themselves. That's one hypothesis, anyway.
“limited food stamps for able-bodies and childless adults”
so it does nothing to stop the teens/20+ yr old women who foolishly get themselves pregnant then cannot provide for their child and the ones that come after.
May sound heartless, but women or men raising a child or more alone should not get many perks from the state or fed. Plenty of other ways for them to have help til they get earning income or increase their income.
GOOD!
My old tagline was....
“Welfare was never meant to be a career choice”
And it wasn’t.
The whole thing needs to be scrapped and let the churches do their job of helping the poor. Makes them accountable as well.
From what I saw on my last trip to MO, much of the rural area resembled the third world. Drugs and welfare have devastated the state. The largest employer seemed to be the police, with the court house and county jail being the largest facilities. I had to drive 80 miles to find a decent hotel. It was right off the Interstate, but when I ran to grab some dinner, I soon became very cognizant that I didn’t have my pistol with me.
This depth of ignorance, poverty, and dependence is not something that will disappear by executive fiat. Much of the country is ravaged as if by cancer. Studies indicate it takes at least 2 years to overcome every year of trauma. If that’s the case, we have a century’s worth of hard work—all the while opposed by almost half the country and virtually every institution.
Except for the fact that Bill Clinton did something similar, that would be downright racist - that and the fact that there are more Whites on welfare than Blacks....
Thank you! ‘Can’t raise a family’ on $10 an hour? How about teenagers seeing entry level jobs NOT making babies the jobs they can do will support? Don’t make what you can’t feed. It’s not business’ responsibility to pay you according to the number of kids you have. If that were the case salaries should double with each birth? Minimum wage for no kids- $10 an hour, for 5 kids $60 an hour? It’s all bass-ackwards!
“move to CA where the teat is expanding and still flowing”
A neighbor worked in State Government, and told me that San Bernardino County had the highest number of people collecting government checks, in CA. The reason is because it was the first county people landed in when they crossed the state line looking to get on the dole, and usually where their car broke down, after the long trip, from wherever they came from :(
There were no jobs; there now are jobs. I understand how hard it is to have been unemployed for 3 of 5 or even 8 years, having gone through the interview process, thinking that THIS time there will be a job, and it turns out that they weren’t really hiring at all, just going through the motions.
This change is coming at the right time. There are jobs available; sure, not the best jobs, but jobs which have fair hours and pay. It’s time we put America back to work, rather than waiting for that EBT card to reload.
What were the results? Skimmed through the article and did not see results.
We’re about to witness the truth that there are jobs Americans will do which the illegal aliens are now doing. Once the pay to stay home is eliminated, the jobs become a lot more appealing.
Was it Bush who suggested that it be a "hand up" rather than a handout?
Some of my employees take that 20 hour thing as a limit.
In the past people have taken on two or three jobs to make ends meet. People can do that today, too. I see help wanted signs all over. They may not be great jobs, but they’re available. We should stop allowing people to sit idly on their fellow taxpayer’s dime. It may be harsh, but it would encourage them to make an effort for themselves.
But living on the welfare system is their American Dream.
Good post.
Over the years, I have had many long conversations with elders that experienced the great depression up close and personal. They either loved FDR or hated him. Few were neutral. The ratio seemed about 50-50.
Many reminisced that a big benefit from those old programs was in keeping the work ethic. They had to show up every day on time. This concept has been lost, but it should be possible to rediscover.
“...childless adults...”
Meh. That’s the loophole. Keep spittin’ out babies, we good.
We are, without doubt, down the rabbit hole. Now people are demanding wages based on the size of their families, not limiting family to their financial situation. Government has been rewarding unchecked reproduction, now private business has to be governed by the employees dependents? ‘Living wage’ will NEVER be enough if you keep making more babies than money. I hope there’s a Trump ladder out of this hole.
Agreed. There are ways out, IMO, that the Dems will fight tooth and nail.
Limit any financial assistance to preschool-aged children already here.
Men do abandon their children, sometimes no fault of the mother, and when those children are preschool age, what to do? The Dem solution is taxpayer-funded daycare. No, no, no.
OTOH, when the child starts public school, THAT is taxpayer-funded babysitting. So, no excuse for mom to sit home smoking crack and hanging with her friends all day. She has the time to get a job/ job training.
And no increase in benefits for subsequent pregnancies/ children, nor any funding for abortions.
We need to disallow Medicaid payments for illegal alien women’s prenatal care, as well as labor and delivery room costs for anchor babies.
We need to understand that welfare in its current form discourages marriage. Many women are claiming to be eligible single mothers, when in fact there IS an “undocumented” man (no marriage on file) in the home who is living off the woman’s benefits. Oftentimes he’s also working for unreported cash or selling drugs.
So the children are, in effect, the official breadwinners, providing the family’s income; and having more children is the incentive to “earn” more money!
It’s true we can’t legislate morality, but we need to stop rewarding irresponsibility. Women DO have power. They can accept responsibility for their choices. Responsibility starts with the understanding that promiscuity leads to fatherless children, and a ticket to a lifetime of poverty.
